Anyone know about this? Graelwyn's going. I have been told today not to mention her young lover if anyone goes.
-
Why, has she gotten another one?
-
No, and I'm not going to go either.
Hey Tom. How was the AV meetup?
-
Hey Lucifer. Have you been to one of those kind of meetups before?
-
No, and I'm not going to go either.
You should go if it is not too far away and you aren't doing anything else.

I've been to an aspie pub meeting a couple of times in the city centre. Didn't like it.
Once I get a job, I might consider meeting Mutate and Robert outside of Bristol with the money I've earned.

What went wrong at it, I have never been on one of these meets?
-
I'd go but it's in London. Maybe a WP ,meeting should occur here in Portland. I am going to a aspie gathering tomorrow, yey but this one is where we can bring friends or family. The normal gatherings is aspies only, I wonder about auties and PDD-NOS's. I'd have to ask Roger Meyers that tomorrow when I see him. He is the leader of the gatherings.
-
Hey Lucifer. Have you been to one of those kind of meetups before?
nope. doesn't really appeal, to be honest. there are people i'd like to meet, on here, for example, but i'm not convinced having some sort of mass meeting (i.e., more than two or three at a time) would be a good way for me to do that.
-
No, and I'm not going to go either.
Hey Tom. How was the AV meetup?
It was ok thanks, but I only really talked to a couple of people.
-
I guess I would if I lived near London. I hate being in rooms with more than 8-10 people usually though, it makes me really uncomfortable. I would deal if I thought I could meet some interesting people. There are a few I wouldn't mind conversing with in real life on this site, but we are all so spread out unfortunately.

I thought you had met quite a few people on here?

nope. dunno what gave you that idea.

nope. dunno what gave you that idea.
The way that some members claim to almost intimately know you. Anyway, who on here would you like to meet? (asides Odeon :P)
-
i don't think that that they have a right to limit your speech. if you go, and you wish to talk about graelwyn's lover then that is your prerogative. if she chooses not to answer, then that is hers.
-
well i hope you guys have fun :)

i talk a lot to various other members, via PM, email, IM and phone, variously. some people here, i've known for years, and probably spoken with more online than most people i know in the flesh, as it were.

I am of the school that you dont really know someone until you meet them in real life, i can never really figure people out online as well as in real life. In real life its a struggle, online its almost impossible.

Like the germans in the Fawlty Towers Episode - whatever you do, don't Mention the war!
Have fun.

all is fair, i suppose.

you're entitled to your opinion, based on your own experience, naturally. i can work people out very quickly, both online and irl, but then i've been trained to do so, and seem to have a natural bent for it to start with. empathy of a house brick, but very intuitive, and have studied people and their behaviour for decades.

How come you got trained to do so, did you study psychology or something in that area? People do fit models, but I dont like to treat people in such a fashion when dealing with them. I like to hope for some quirks.

Agreed for the most part. Although, I'd add that it doesn't necessarily require training.
-
what can you say about me Lucifer? :P
i am intuitive also and work out fast which people i like.
i don't believe people fit models. they can fit models but they don't perfectly, because they are unique.

I'd like to meet a fair number of people IRL who are on this forum. But, certainly not in a large group or in a busy, noisy place where I couldn't hear myself think. A small group, 3 maybe 4 would be ok!
-
Those of you that I want to meet in real life are easily counted. No offense to anyone, but I don't like people. The vast majority of you are only electrons on my screen.
-

I feel the same way, Od.
-
Me three.
-
No problem Odeon, the times that I actually want to meet people in a social situation are few and far between. And I am not likely to initiate the meeting. The one time I met an aspie from a forum was because she suggested it and lived nearby. So my wife, daughter and myself went down to meet her. She was 21 and had more in common with my daughter than she did with me, for obvious reasons. But, it was interesting meeting her parents. Her father was definitely an aspie and a retired doctor!
-
Me three.
But you're more than an electron to me, my dear -- you are a special electron.
:violin:
-
I prefer meeting one person at a time for some reason. More than one seems to much for me. I'm just a follower when it comes to social gatherings and I do my own thing. I'm an NT if I'm with one person.

Trying to serenade Py with my l33t violin skills.

It would yep. I know some people online that I will soon be meeting IRL, they are in my new uni. It could prove intresting to see how much they are like their online personas.

You're being a bit nitpicky though. :P Common interests are a good thing, even if the D&D stereotype is a bit overplayed.

Stereotype geeky guys? Well I guess I can only speak for myself, but I know more than a few other geeky guys who feel the same about women who are into RPGs. They are attracted to them more than they would be to some girl who isn't into gaming. I think you really don't like me much at all, just by your responses to about anything I type. Who doesn't want friends that share similar interests with them?

I agree with the bolded part in the general. It was the stereotypical application that I was objecting too.

Honestly, I neither like nor dislike you, Alex. On the other hand, I strongly dislike stereotypes. It is something I've seen you do on more than one occasion. You'd think being on an aspie board, you might recognize that people might get a little touchy when someone uses a label and immediately snaps to judgments about the person so labeled.
-
I can say whatever I want about geeky guys who play RPGs, since I am one. That is basically what most of my friends are as well. I am not stereotyping them and yes they are attracted to women who aren't into games. They just pine for women who are gamers, that is even more attractive to them. It isn't just a stereotype for D&Ders or RPG geeks either. People want to be around others who are into similar things.
I use statistics to make a point and maybe I stereotype here and there, but it is almost always based on some personal experience of mine.

You misunderstood me. I'm not objecting to the notion that people seek others with at least some of the same interests.
As for statistics, 'me and my friends' is not exactly statistically significant.

That wasn't a statistic. I was referring to past posts that contain something you would find as stereotypical. I know whether I am quoting statistics or not lol. That was based on my personal experience and I have never even bothered to look up statistics based on it. That much should have been obvious. You were talking about my previous usage of stereotypes and the use of statistics was what I was referring to in that regard.
That is the same thing, objecting to me stereotyping D&D RPG nerds that way is just saying they want friends who have the same interests as them. There is no difference and it isn't a stereotype imo. Basically it is common sense that people seek out others with similar interests, in that case I was talking about geeky RPG loving guys.

I'd say the same, but the aspie meetings I've been to IRL haven't been much bigger than that, thank goodness.
How many came to that one in Windmill, mutate? about 6-7?
I'd be a bit more wary of London meetings, 'cause I suspect they'd tend to be bigger. I tried to get to a London meeting once (can't remember which group had organised it) but the chosen venue was so busy, noisy, and big that I couldn't find the group, and didn't feel like trying very hard. Idiots! Luckily, I had other reasons for being in London, at the time, so it wasn't a waste of a train ticket
So far, I've found that the aspies I've met have been no different IRL than on the boards, except shyer, sometimes, as you'd expect. It's been an enjoyable experience. But, then, I've heard of others having unpleasant experieces for much the same reason *chuckle*

Walkie, if me and "Garnet" ever find ourselves in the UK. Your going to be one of the first people we let know of our travel plans. As of now, it looks like Kota (from Fractalus) in Michigan will be the next aspie we meet. Since thats the state where Garnet/Carla's family is based in.
-
I just went to the first aspie one today that was the potluck and my boyfriend and I spent the whole entire time watching South Park season 10 on my Dad's laptop I brought along. I got to meet Furball and Lelia from WP. I only spoke to a couple aspies as a conversaton and one of them was oblivious to his condition too. He doesn't know anything about AS and he doesn't notice it he says and he has no clue how he is effected by it.

girls are geeks too you know. all my childhood friends loved games, it was totally normal, noone was even called a geek cuz computer games were naturally considered great fun.
anyway, do you know any cute geeks? i LOVE geeky boys. they're the best. :P

I've been to meetups for a computer nerd forum (www.atomicmpc.com.au) which I suppose would be similar. They were tough.

girls are geeks too you know. all my childhood friends loved games, it was totally normal, noone was even called a geek cuz computer games were naturally considered great fun.
anyway, do you know any cute geeks? i LOVE geeky boys. they're the best. :P
Most of my friends were considered somewhat geeky in school due to their lack of sports participation and the fact that they enjoyed video games and things of that nature more. That and a good portion of us upgraded our own PCs and played PC games for most of our teenage years. Most of my friends have grown out of that and are involved in more serious pursuits. They still game from time to time, but nothing like we used to do at eachother's houses all day long and such.
Well that would be up to the judgement of someone else whether my friends are "cute" or not (or me for that matter). I don't keep up with some of them like I should have though, but most of my friends are already married and with kids (the geeky ones from my childhood). I am a somewhat geeky guy myself, but the friends I hang out with more now are gamers but they are the stoner type (not really geeks at all). They mainly play FPSs and war related stuff, not so much RPG and adventure games. They all played sports their entire childhoods, skateboard, surf and do other things that aren't considered geeky.

Cambridge could be fun. Much easier to escape the crowds than in London. Not sure how easily people would be able to get there, though - I'll have to check how many places have direct trains to Cambridge.

Bitch, PLEASE! I'm not the one banning people and driving others away with a haughty, arrogant narcissistic personality.
Why don't you give the site back to Dunc or hand it over to McJagger? Or better yet, lets have a vote of who the (few remaining) members want to run things.
