Title: Labor day.
Post by: 'andersom' on September 04, 2010, 06:14:10 PM
The days listed at the bottom of this forum sometimes intrigue me. Thought I'd make a thread about this one.

Labor day.

What is it, where is it celebrated, and how do you celebrate this day?

It's an American holiday to celebrate the working many traditionally the end of the summer Usually it's a big cook out day.  I am working :-\

One of the reasons I am so excited about KIT is that in less than two weeks I may actually meet my very first son, but aside from that ...

One of my best "friends"  at work is due to have a baby this week end. I asked a few months back (some time in May) if she had done backwards counting to determine the date to conceive so that her baby should become due on LABOR DAY.

She just looked at me and said, "NO WAY!!  How did you think of that?"  I just told her that I have been a businessman in the past and when she told me the timetable, I thought of business concerns. I told her that she will be very busy that week end.

As it turns out, she is in the hospital  "on bed rest"  (a few touchy concerns, but no big deal - I hope)  until the baby comes. She sent an email yesterday to many of us to say that she will be induced Monday (Labor day)  at seven AM, if the baby has not come yet.

Total coincidence, but I think, somewhat ironic as well.

Great indeed. Though, obligatory bed rest is no fun at all.

I am working on Labor Day as well, but I am getting my normal hourly pay at "time and a half"  (just like it was overtime pay)  PLUS the regular "paid holiday" pay. Add it up and that is two and one half times my normal daily wage for working on a National Holiday.

It will probably be very busy, because most people do not "celebrate"  Labor Day, except to go buy shit and cook out.

(I have two huge strips of baby back ribs to barbecue   -    :2thumbsup:)

Obviously, I was just joking about her counting backwards, but the humorous notion had crossed my mind in an instant and, as many such thoughts do, that thought simply tumbled from my brain, right out of my mouth.

Labor Day, a US holiday, is the first Monday in September, which will be on September 6 this year.

We went up into the mountains and cooked out today, even though it was a few days early.

Not really - over the years, I have come to know.

^ Aha. And no, don't apologise for the wall of text - it seems though you find perhaps getting out as you write, you work through the emotions too.

I have never, and will never, get the concept of a woman keeping the knowledge of a child from a man (unless he was a criminal or something dangerous, or something where she geniunely thought she was protecting 'someone').

Maybe she thought you wouldn't hang around, or wanted you to want her for her, without complicating it by telling you the child was yours and feeling that you might feel you were 'obligated' to work on the relationship.

I hope her heart was in the right place and she thought it was the right thing to do.

I am going to cut and paste The body of my response to a more appropriate  place.

My first OT rambling was at least a little ironic. The later one is just big and out of place.

Fair enough, but it is the Labour Day thread. You are tackling a laborious task ahead (bad joke, right?). But yes, I saw you put it in your Questions thread.

The Australian Lobur Day is held at different times of the year depending on which state you live in. The only ones I know offhand are Second Monday of March for Victoria and first Monday in May for QLD. There is usually a festival held on the Victorian one called Moomba (which some people think is Aboriginal for 'let's get together and have fun' - most aborigines might say different).

The Dutch don't have labor day on the first of May, like lots of European countries do have. There was a dread for that much of socialism. (saw that Labor day in the USA also is not on May first on purpose in that link you posted Callaway)

But, in protestant circles, there are two days, second Wednesday of March, and first Wednesday of November dedicated to crops and labour. March is praying for crops and labour, November is thanking for crops and labour.

It's not a day off though, just a sermon on those days. So, no real festivity

Mayday is actually a Pagan feast day, called Beltane. I guess it has something to do with spring harvest.

Labor Day serves as Summers last hurrah for people wanting to get some BBQ and party time in with family and friends before the kids go back to school and Autumn arrives. So, in effect, it can be the last big formal get together of Summer.

Six evenings a week, I wash dishes in a burger restaurant in my neighborhood. It's not a bad job, and the extra money really helps!  :2thumbsup:
