Pope Francis has chided couples who choose not to have children, saying the decision is a “selfish” act. The statement, made in his general audience in St Peter’s Square, will be seen as especially controversial in Italy, which has recorded a steady drop in its birth rate for decades.
“A society with a greedy generation, that doesn’t want to surround itself with children, that considers them above all worrisome, a weight, a risk, is a depressed society,” the pope said. “The choice to not have children is selfish. Life rejuvenates and acquires energy when it multiplies: It is enriched, not impoverished.”
The address was focused primarily on the joy of children and their role in society. The pope recalled a childhood memory, when his mother was asked which of her five children was her favourite. “She would say, ‘I have five children like I have five fingers. If they beat one of my fingers, all five hurt. All of my children are mine, but each one is different,’” he said.
“You love your child because he is a child, not because he is beautiful, healthy, and good; not because he thinks like me, or embodies my desires. A child is a child: a life created by us but destined for him.”
He said there was a strong correlation between a society’s level of hope and its “inter-generational harmony”.
The remarks echoed his earlier comments on the topic of childlessness. Last year, he warned against the lure of a “culture of wellbeing” that can come when a couple does not have children and has the money and freedom to take nice holidays and buy a second home in the countryside.
“It might be better, more comfortable, to have a dog, two cats, and the love goes to the two cats and the dog,” he said. “Is this true or is this not? Have you seen it? Then, in the end, this marriage comes to old age in solitude, with the bitterness of loneliness.”
“The joy of children makes their parents hearts throb and reopens the future,” he said. “Children are not a problem of reproductive biology, or one of many ways to realize oneself in life. Let alone their parent’s possession. Children are a gift. Do you understand? Children are a gift,” he added.
Last week, the pontiff said that hitting a child was an acceptable form of discipline, although it was important to maintain their “dignity” in the process.
The Vatican later clarified the remark, saying the pope did not endorse violence or cruelty against a child.
I would like to know who his lucky lady is, and when she is due.

The world is overpopulated and overcrowded, so I don't really see his logic :dunno:

I wonder if he wants to babysit?
The man needs to seriously put a cork in it.

Just when I think the pope is a closeted secular humanist, he goes and says stupid shit like this. ::)

He fronts a religion that isn't known for its contraceptive measures.

He probably has to publicly balance his opinion that people should not breed like rabbits a bit, to still get some credits with his curie.
It is about politics there in the Vatican.

I agree with both quoted sentiments.
I also rather wonder what he'd have to say about people like me who just plain *can't* conceive in the first place (I don't want kids anyway, but, still). I'm on thin ice with the catholic church as far as personhood anyway because of the celiac, lol (men with celiac are actually kinda discouraged from becoming priests because communion wafers are made of wheat, which sort of amazes me). And I mean first and foremost because I'm a woman, obviously (and then also because I converted to atheism years ago).

He would not see you guilty, he would feel sorry for you, I guess. And he most likely would rejoice in seeing you found other ways to help people in this world.
(You having a bed companion out of wedlock would be something he'd frown upon)

My bed companion has so much student loan debt it may never be financially viable for us to get married, even if we're together for years and years. Marriage is a really major legal and financial decision.
(Not that he'd care, but, like, just sayin'.)
Though, really, I'm guessing the pope would also not approve of at least one of the drawers in the bureau next to my bed.
He might also say I ought to look into adoption, which (realistically) I may or may not even be able to pull off if I wanted to. If I went through the right channels and tried for a kid who was (for whatever reason) less traditionally "desirable" to prospective adoptive parents, I probably could, but I'm single, don't make a ton of money, don't have a lot of supports, and have oodles and oodles of issues. I know I would not make a good parent, but I'm not sure that really matters when you're talking doctrine (or when you're talking adoption criteria, unless you're out-and-out saying so to the people you're working with).
-
talking adoption criteria
Is there even much of that around anymore? No one else has to meet criteria to have a kid.

No, I was mistaken. They'll actually give babies to whoever asks for them, just like they're puppies at a pet store. :autism:

Certainly some extreme circumstances might be indelible, such as criminal past. Was being serious and understood strict restriction of days of old were no more, as far as having to provide a Cleaver household to be eligible. Didn't think a single educated and employed individual would be in any way excluded.

This, as well, is a good source of info: https://www.childwelfare.gov/topics/adoption/ (https://www.childwelfare.gov/topics/adoption/)
Lots of hurdles, Jack. The statement "No one else has to meet criteria to have a kid." is debatable in and of itself, but when you start talking adoption, you sure as shit do need to meet criteria.

That last link was good. It makes sense it varies from state to state; should have expected that. Apparently there are a few states still strict about things like straight married couples with good income, though it does appear most states are fairly amicable in what's considered acceptable, and while there is some criteria it's not generally extreme. It reads more like meeting criteria of a home in which the state wouldn't remove a child, finding it acceptable rather than requiring some high standard. This is a link from your link which seems to agree quite a bit with what I had in mind. https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubPDFs/homestudyreqs_adoption.pdf (https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubPDFs/homestudyreqs_adoption.pdf)

To some extent, yes, but it's extreme circumstances where people aren't allowed to leave a hospital with custody of a newborn. Was just thinking attitudes from the days of old were gone, where the state considered orphans better off in state institutions with no parents at all, than with single parents, gay parents, older parents, lower waged parents, racially mixed, or whatever. Seems it's not entirely gone, but maybe getting that way.

Some people do grow up allright.
It requires some attention though, a lot of parents seem to treat their kids like they are cats. Like, place out some food for them, and they'll be fine

They are always bathing and kissing the feet of the poor or downtrodden.
In Roman Catholic Church, the ritual washing of feet is now associated with the Mass of the Lord's Supper, which celebrates in a special way the Last Supper of Jesus, before which he washed the feet of his twelve apostles.
Evidence for the practice on this day goes back at least to the latter half of the twelfth century, when "the pope washed the feet of twelve sub-deacons after his Mass and of thirteen poor men after his dinner.

And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. ~Luke 7:37-38

Do those long haired women cover their heads with hats when they go to church, or even during the day?
In that case it probably has to do with 1 Corinthians 11:5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

Still seems an odd practice, as the bible doesn't really propose it as something which should be done, and not sure the connection with that passage about Jesus and how it would relate to husbands. Now wondering if they also wash their husband's feet with their own tears.
-
Maybe he is here already? :o
He is Buttcoffee :zoinks:

There is a church near us where the women always wear long skirts, high necklines, and never cut their hair (so that they can dry their husbands feet with it). :zombiefuck:
Have never heard of that as a religious practice. Tried to look it up but couldn't find it. Do you know any more about them?
And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. ~Luke 7:37-38
I think it's actually for the passage you posted, the one I had contact with though had that gleam in her eye and had obviously been drinking a lot of frack water.

Most wear long skirts, high necklines, no jewelry, don't cut their hair, don't own a TV, and don't talk back.
Neighbors mother was a member.
There is a similar one up the road from that one, another 3 miles away, then we have the JW a few miles from that.
Training camps for good, obedient wives...as I like to call them.
The Catholics and the others have their own street basically. Some seriously old and beautiful churches here for a run-down coal mining town.
Most of them don't...although there are some of those running around here too.
SO's counselor is one...he kept coming home and telling me he had this new counselor that wore a doily pinned on the top of her head and he couldn't understand why. I told him "why don't you ask her?" ;)
...and of course he asked ...and it was something like that.

Went with my former neighbour to her church, when her babies were introduced there (Brunstad Christian Church). Most women did not wear hats but all had a hat or a bit of cloth with them to put on the top of their head during prayer. Quite a few used baby towels to cover their heads with. Was funny to see.
A lot of hat churches not far from where I live too. I live just above the bible belt. Sunday mornings standing on the bridge over the IJssel 10 km away from me is an experience. hatted families cycling in both directions. Young girls wearing their hats in their hands, the older women have hats rooted on their head.
10 km in the other direction there is big activity from baptists and JW.

Good thing I'm not in any of those churches. My head is too big and bumpy for a hat. :trollskull:

People need to have more children to feed to the war machine. The Military Industrial Complex still needs people to use their tools of death and destruction, so they can keep on selling them to the world's governments. Gotta keep profits up!!!! CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME HOMIE LOL
Haven't you been gone for like 5 years?
I visited and read a few messages here and there, but yeah, I guess it has been 5 years.

Also, God needs more souls to fill up all that room in hell. :M
If they die doing God's work, they might not go to hell. There is a place for Holy Martyrs.

His last post before returning was on July 23, 2010. :police:
A couple of people messaged me and I got bored, so I posted a few times. Yipee. I could also disappear again, quite easily.

Yes, you could. But what fun would that be? :tard:

Dunno, this place is not really that fun when I look around and see what is going on. It is a different day, but mostly the same boring ass shit.

It's even too big for one post.
But, you could wear a baby towel on your head or, in your case, a beach towel.

I have a big head too. I'd have to go for something with adhesive strips.
