I was thinking about addiction and addictive tendencies this morning and became curious about this groups experience with tobacco. Answer if you feel like it.
-
Good topic, but I don't fit any of the voting categories. I have never
had a habit of smoking, but out of curiosity I have smoked sporadically over the years
(between ages 19 and 33). I have smoked less than a pack in my life. I'm sure I looked
really badass standing by the side of the road in a neighborhood far from home,
awkwardly puffing where no one I know could see me. :autism:
I have to say, as little as I've smoked, I do "get" the addictiveness of it, somewhat.
I remember my vision suddenly getting sharper for a moment after taking
the first drag, and years after my last cigarette I have occasionally, out of nowhere,
recalled the taste and/or craved the taste. It's a good thing I've never gotten
hooked! I congest easily and have bronchitis almost every winter, accompanied
by a worse cough than I've heard from any of my smoking co-workers. :autism:

I added an option for you :)

Thank you for the option! I smoked my last cig at least a dozen years ago,
so I think I'm safely non-addicted. I'm grateful neither parent smoked. :)

I quit 5 years ago and used a website support group with a handy gadget that sends me stats like this every couple of months:
1851 days, 15 hours, 42 minutes and 27 seconds smoke free.
37033 cigarettes not smoked.
$12,038.00 and 9 months, 12 days, 21 hours of your life saved.
Your quit date: 9/16/2007 6:00:00 PM

I started smoking at uni and gave it up 9 months later or thereabouts. I think it started with accepting the occasional offer of a cigarette while drinking in the bar and enjoying the buzz of the nicotine (feels much better when drunk than when sober), and soon I was buying pouches of tobacco and getting to practice my cigarette rolling perhaps 10 times a day. It helped with the stress at uni, but I didn't want to ruin my health, so I gave it up. It took a couple of tries to quit, since I was pretty well addicted to it, but I made it and was free from cravings after a few months.

They are pretty close to the same amount of time that I spent as a serious smoker, so when you look at the numbers in reverse they are kind of stomach-turning.

I hate to see my friends smoke. I once estimated that one friend would save $6,000
in one year if she and her husband quit. I will keep encouraging her to quit! :viking:

I'm pretty sure I wasn't spending anywhere close to that amount when I was smoking, but that's because I was using rolling tobacco; a £5 pouch would last me a couple of weeks or something (the cigarettes I rolled would be a lot smaller than the ones that come in packets, and I couldn't pack too much tobacco into them or I wouldn't be able to draw air through them).

Don't know what to fill in in the poll. :P
I've smoked, on occasions. Liked the taste, did inhale, but, it did not make me crave for more.
Found it ideal, when going out with friends, after one fag, smoke in bars didn't irritate my eyes any more.
Liked the taste of cigars even better. So, may have bought three tins of cigars, in my life. (yeah, really heavy user....)
Smoked a bit more around my twenties and forties, when I used cannabis using tobacco as a flammable. Was not hard to stop with that either. Disliked the effect of the tobacco.
Somehow the smoking things, and alcohol are not the hard addictions.
Chocolate though, that's way harder.
And, when agitated, under stress, or what ever, I crave dairy and sugar, and, it isn't doing me any good when I'm in that mode. Downward spiral, making me crave for more, etc.
Funny, when everything is OK, sugar and milk don't have that hold on me.

I avoid chocolate since once I start eating it regularly, I get withdrawal effects when I stop (headaches and feeling lousy for a couple of days and cravings that last a few weeks). The headaches and lousy feeling from quitting caffeine is worse than for chocolate, but the cravings for caffeine are much milder.
-
I have always loved the smell of cigarette smoke mixed with fresh outdoor air.
I foolishly expected my first cigarette to taste like that. I sure got a surprise!

I added an option for you too, but am out of space for any more :)

I smoked an occasional cig to try them growing up, smoked far more weed than I ever did cigarettes back then.
But even that was never to excess, a few hits and I was done. If I drink wine I have one glass, 2 if I want to get toasty, 2 beers max if I'm drinking beer.
I'm boring as fuck basically, don't get drunk, don't get high, and I don't have any outstanding debt. Every once in awhile I open the truck up on a deserted 4 lane. ::)
-
I smoked a pack a day for years and years until seven years ago. Quitting was about the hardest thing I've ever done and I still miss my cigarettes.
-
Tried to start smoking on 3 occasions. Never even finished a pack each time. The only time I ever craved cigarettes was when I was on bedrest with the PR. Probably boredom more than a real craving.
-
I have a packet of consolate (menthol) in the cupboard, which will probably last me a couple of weeks.
I used to smoke a ten box of benson & hedges a day before i had the urchin.
I never smoke around the boy, nor do i allow anyone else to.
Weed and other narcotic use are all in my past, or at least not anywhere near the urchin :police:

Just to sound like a real addict :p :
The clean stuff is OK, when it comes to chocolate. The darker the better. No withdrawal symptoms, nor extended cravings when the cocoa percentage is above 70.
I tell you, it's those sugars and added fats, they are evil. :hyke:
-
Oh, and a confession, I have introduced my kids into chocolate.
-
I quit and it was easy. Tobacco is not addictive to me.
-
Still smoke 'me' own thinly rolled fags on a daily basis. With fresh (tadski moist) tobacco and gummed rice-paper. Um, p/m 20 of them a day.. for ja, I'm a stupid mother fucker.. being totally aware of all of the negative this addiction brings.
Lack the wish to quit these days though.

Not many who are as lucky as you and I are, when it comes to that.
Loved rolling cigarettes for my uncle, as a little kid. Great way to pass Sunday visits. (He also taught me how to produce a decent beer from the tap, when I was around 10.)
-
Quitting coffee wasn't hard for me either. But, quitting tea is impossible.
Still drink coffee, and it better be good coffee, but, not every day.
-
I smoked a few cigarettes here and there when I was out drinking in college but it never really appealed to me. I hate the cigarette smoke smell but oddly enough love the smell of a freshly opened pack of them. Chocolate and coffee on the other hand, just have to have them
-
Coffee ...that's probably my only "gotta have it".
It cuts through the fog, and stabilizes my mood. :rollingpin:

I only tried smoking once and didn't like it. I was curious. I have tried cigars several times. Not fond of it either. I have my own addiction and it's sure not smoking.

Is the UK the only place where cigarettes are called fags? Also, does anywhere else use the expression 'bumming' to describe getting a cigarette off of someone else?
I call them fags, but that because of too much time spent in the UK, and I rapidly discovered that if you ask someone anywhere else in the world if you can ‘bum a fag’ you might get punched….
I still suck fags. The problem with it is that I LIKE sucking fags. I don’t actually WANT to stop sucking fags. No excuses.
Go on, shower me with hate….
-
It's called bomma in Swedish to ask strangers for cigarettes.

Yes, fag has a very different meaning in the US. Almost as bad as nigger. Bumming is used commonly though.

A friend of mine converted me to dark chocolate. She hates milk chocolate,
says it has a greasy mouthfeel in her opinion. I sometimes bring her cookies with 70%. 8)

I smoked once when I was five years old and I have never smoked since then.
I tried when I was five or six because my aunt smoked and she go outside and smoke. I would try several times but her and my parents always stopped me and my cousin would tell on me when she would see me try. I never got to puff the thing at that age.

My grandmother smoked and I didn't like that she did. I asked her what she saw in it and she gave me her lit cigarette so I could take a puff. I inhaled deeply and choked on the smoke.

It is done here in Australia too but not commonly. People do ask, though, if they can "bum a smoke".
I have tried cigarettes - when I was 14 or so - and I thought they tasted terrible.

Do you still want to smoke?

Smoked a couple of times. Never got addicted to it because it isn't something I found pleasure doing.
-
Really well done, McJ.
Do you still want to smoke?
not really. Occasionally I think, "a cigarette would be nice right now,'" but its not a strong urge.
I refuse to give in and have even one because. Don't want to have to quit again.

Exactly. A lady from my workplace ( now retired ), said the same thing after quitting for the last time. :)

That's why I don't want to smoke now, either. Quitting was hard.

I envy those people that can have a casual cigarette.
