Nobody else would buy land?
Massive amounts of money, yeah, I'd buy land, and get it forested too. Massive amounts of land.
And a very private plot for me too. Somewhere close to the sea, and close to the woods.

With that amount of money, you could hire someone to take care of the Llamas.

I'd spend it on another testicular implant. :green:

Along with lots of forested land.......there'll be an earth bermed house, wind turbine, solar panels, fresh water source & bio diesel production equipment.
Also the main residence must be situated so that is is easily defendable from the masses that flee the cities when the collapse of society comes.

Maybe a house on a private island or up in the mountains would be nice.
You would have to leave to get supplies from time to time, though.

How did you get to the private island?
Boat, Once all the materials were delivered in containers that the garbage was stuffed into at the end of the job before they too them away. The second time we went with two trainees who just rode the boat back and forth with the materials till we had them all and we had to carry out the garbage. The guy spent over six million dollars just to have the electrical service ran out to his island. He had five houses on it one was the care takers which I worked on another was a boat house which was the other one I worked on. There was his house, a guest house and a tea house. It is Tavern Island st off Norwalk Ct. He was weird he bought a million dollar home next to were he docked his boat and parked his car and tore it down to make room for his garage on the mainland It was a strange experience. I have worked on the most bizarre houses you can think of some even for famous people

If I had a lot of money to spend, I wouldn't go for a used Jaguar...

I'd keep the truck too. 8)
Just need more cargo space on grocery days sometimes. :zoinks:
-
I would buy my own bar
-
I'd rebuild our house.
-
I'd go to Ripon, England, and stay there tracing my great-great-grandmother's family. :viking:

I'd rebuild our house.
I would build one out it the middle of the woods miles from neighbors

You'd like the location of our house. While it's not miles from the closest neighbours (I'd say around 700 metres), we can't really see them and definitely not hear them. ;D
-
I'd rebuild our house.
Why does it need rebuilding?
-
I would want to live in a place where the nights are still dark.
So, a house in an area without street-lights, without huge amounts of traffic and without background light from other things.
-

Why does it need rebuilding?
I'd like to make it bigger, improve the soundproofing and isolation, and we need a more modern kitchen.
-
i'd buy a house so i would never have to pay rent again, then i'd probably get serious into card collecting the old stuff like ty cobb, christie matthewson and mickey mantle stuff
-
I'd like to have a house in Telluride, and maybe another in Ripon, UK. 8)

Second that. When I lived in MA I lived in places with no streetlights, and in FL we had one on the whole street, around the corner. You could walk out and see stars. I followed Orion until we moved here.
It was also quiet since the houses were off the beaten track.
I would also go to Florida and buy a 1991 Toyota Camry (preferably white) with a sun/moon roof, air conditioning and luxury seats. One of the best cars I ever owned. You could put a million miles on those things and fix anything that went wrong yourself.
-

I grew up in a place like that. I like a little bit of light.
SO's trailer up in the woods is like that, creepy dark...so dark you run up to the door at night because bigfoot is hiding in the trees waiting to drag your ass off into the woods and eat you.
Yes I do still use a night light.

I grew up with darkness. Loved it. No curtains closed when I went to bed. If I couldn't sleep, I could see Orion move. Only 'disturbed' by the lights of cars passing by. But those were cool too, making patterns on my ceiling.
Never saw more shooting stars than when I was a kid. I love the dark.
-
Let's put in a skylight - it's awesome when it snows and you can hear it falling on the skylight - when it's done you can see moonshine marking the patterns in the snow. For Py I would also build a couple of climbing walls - one inside and one on one of the outside walls of the house.
and just because i am geeky i would buy repair insurance for the house in addition to all the other kinds they make you buy.
how much money are we talking about, anyway?

A lot. :zoinks:

In that case I am going to buy more land and build a retreat center with full amenities.
Rough outline:
It will be a hike in center with a restricted handicap accessible (via atv) road.
I'll have cabins around a main center where there will be conference rooms, a video theater, a listening room and small meeting rooms. The area will be large enough to handle 50 to 100 people - no more than that tramping around in the woods (there will be marked trails). It will be open year round with some rooms reserved for individuals or very small groups and the rest available for larger groups.
There will be an exercise room, a small indoor pool and a hot tub. Might add a sauna later.
In addition to housekeeping staff there will be counseling staff, a concierge and a business manager with good social and business skills. There will be kitchen staff for larger meetings and a smaller private kitchen available for individuals.
-
A nice big lot of land (10 acres or more) west of Redmond.
I'd build a big shop building and an energy efficient house on it.
Then I'd just play with my toys, drink beer and smoke some dank. :stoned:
-
Telluride? isn't there a gold mine round those parts? IIRC the name comes from their being a natural gold telluride mineral in the region, that was easily smelted down.
I would get my own place, somewhere with a large garage, and a shed like the one we have now, only I'd upgrade the machine shop, I'd love a large scale 3D printer, one of the ones that can print in titanium, build a laser spot welder, would love a CNC lathe and CNC milling machine; currently got an old capstan turret lathe, pre-WWII, was an antique when my old man got it as an apprentice, and he's a pensioner now. Setup entirely manual, adjusting screw stops for setting the tool cutting depth. Stil, it works, and once past the pain in the arse setup its lovely to use.
I'd kit myself out with a MIG welder (actually thinking of buying one, I could save up, within my price range), and use the power supply to power a homemade plasma torch.
Plus I'd get somewhere with space to fit some HUGE fucking great electromagnets, to build an isochronous cyclotron, something I've wanted to do for ages, plus space for the hefty quadrupole and sextupole magnets for focussing the particle beams for the experiments I want to try out,
In particular, I really want to obtain a radioisotope that ONLY has electron capture as its sole means of decay, and excite it to a Rydberg matter state.
In Rydberg atoms, the electrons are excited to higher and higher energy levels, eventually to the extent where the electron cloud 'sees' the nucleus of the atom as a point charge. I want to try exciting such an electron-capture radioisotope of an element to a Rydberg state, because I want to find out if the radioactive decay could be halted, by more or less, dragging off the electrons so far that they become isolated to the extent that electron capture becomes impossible.
-
Large property like a farm with out buildings with some frontage on a well traveled road for an antique barn
-

I hadn't heard they were making those now. I'd imagine it would have to be a sealed unit contained inside an argon purgebox. Whenever Ti gets heated up to melting temperature, it has to be in an oxygen free environment.

Is that a benchtop model, similar to one of the Hardinge chucker lathes??

The first production lathe I ever ran was a British made Automatic Accuratool like this one.

I'll try to remember to take a picture of it tomorrow. Doesn't look anything like it, and it isn't THAT new. This one has a well-loved look to it for sure.
-
I would take out the grass in my yard. Have it landscaped with flowers and a pathway or two in the front yard. The back yard would have some flower areas and the rest garden with something soft in those pathways.
-
Give up work. Maybe do a cooking course and open a small restaurant or cafe. Take my son to the Smithsonian, the British Museum, and the air museum at Duxford. Buy a house for each of my children. Join a boat-share club.
-

Great idea and I did similar many years ago.
Now I only have grass to mow along the sidewalks on the street side and a bit in the back yard.
The rest is all mine. Only veggie things I grow up front where most of my permanent perennial plantings and spring bulbs are established is a few patches of onions and garlic plus a couple of basil plants up near the house.
The back yard is where all my vegetables grow. Of course on two sides I have deep plantings of screening shrubs, very tall and impossible to see through.
My cop "friends" hate this, because it would allow hiding places for fleeing suspects. I just remind them that they do not need to worry and that if they are in my yard, they are MINE!
They gave my mom the same crap, told her that since she was a senior citizen the city would pay to come in and cut everything down and remove it all. FUCK! She had spent thousands of dollars buying special flowering shrubs and paving little trails all through it so my wheelchair bound father could enjoy his final years, in his own back yard just moments from the kitchen table any time he felt like it.
-
I would custom build a house somewhere rural with woods and hills but within a half hour drive of amenities. There would be a garage with a coach house on top and I would hire a live-in nanny for the cub who would have a private suite up there. The house would have an art studio with lots of sunlight, guest rooms and yes, I think I'll borrow WolFish's climbing wall concept from earlier in the thread and put one on the inside and one on the outside. The inside one would be in a tower with a reading/viewing nook up top.
-
DD-If they'd have said that to me, I'm pretty sure I'd have had to give them advanced warning, that then next thing I would be planting
would be a crop of land mines. Right before I threw them over the hedge and told them they can STAY fucked off, because I as deadly serious about the antipersonnel mines.
Raxy-sounds nice, I'd love to visit chateux de la 'raxy. :)
