Post by: Tom/Mutate on June 27, 2007, 11:58:40 AM
I have a video game that can only run on windows 95 or 98, and i think this pc i am using is xp or 2000.      Can I set it up to play this game?  I'm sure I did it on my older PC (whic hwas 2000) to play "Duke Nukem 3D", but I can't remember what i did.   Thanks!

Download dosbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) and run it from there.  You have to mount the game's folder as a drive, but it's all in the instructions and once you figure it out, it's pretty straight forward.

DOSBOX is good for Duke Nukem 3d and DOS specific games.  Any desktop virtualization software works for that purpose to emulate a DOS environment.  If you are doing Win 95/98 games, you might be ok depending on the game.   If they were actually made for Windows and not DOS you shouldn't need DOSBOX or anything.    right click --> Properties on a the executeable.   Click on "Compatiblity" tab, then select Windows 95. Now it will run the program using the Win95 OS kernel. If you still have problems getting it to launch, add addtional settings such as set to 640x480, etc.
