They are closing New York City as of noon tomorrow. They are telling people to evacuate now (mandatory); they have to get out by 5pm tomorrow. Public transportation is free as of 8pm. They are storing the trains and buses (apparently it takes 8 hours) starting at noon.
Wow. They are taking this very seriously.
My mother lives almost at the top of a hill. I am staying here in case of emergency. It is a tough go about my car but nothing for it right now. I am going to try to park it safely.
Others are skeptical. My mom went out to the U.S. Open.
It will be annoying if the power goes out, but it would be worse if I was at her summer house.
New Jersey is saying they will stop rescues when the wind reaches a particular speed.
Apparently the ocean is already rising.
Fun fun fun.
I wish I had somewhere to go so I could use the free public transportation. People are buying prodigious amounts of water. We filled a couple of gallon bottles. I'm overweight so not worried about food. Without internet I will suffer.
-
A couple of gallons of water doesn't seem like a lot. Scrub and clean the bathtub and fill it with water. If the electricity goes out your water supply might not work, even if it's municipal. The water in the toilet tank can be used for quick washes since it's clean. If you have them or can get one or 2, fill a garbage can with water.
Use a wastebasket lined with a plastic grocery bag (with handles). Put some cat litter, newspaper, paper towels in it to use as an emergency toilet. Just put the bags outside until they can be sent to the trash.
Play cards to pass the time. Good luck
-
Good point about the pumps. Sigh, and I left a water bottle outside at my mom's summer house. I guess I will ask her to ask her neighbor to take it in so it doesn't do damage.
One of the reasons we have so little water is because we have all these containers of juice and soup. However, we will fill the bathtub in the hopes of being able to flush the toilet.
We also have a couple of water filters.
Its looking like all we're going to get is a storm surge. But this area was hard hit by the snow in the winter and then the rain spring and summer - everything is already overloaded.
Sigh.
It's too much. They are cancelling things for Monday. I got an email from my travel agent and I'm not even going until Wednesday. It's moving *east,* FFS!
-
Good luck and be safe, wolfish.
-
Be safe. I will be thinking of you and all of my other friends there.
-
eh, now it's moved west.
*fills the bathtub*
-
It won't hit you?
-
Here's hoping it misses you all together Wolfish. Stay safe.

Agreed.

One of the projections I saw today had the eye passing over Central Long Island then over Ct between New Haven and Bridgeport that is just where I am :o I am less than a mile from the water too. The only thing I worry about is my tent garage ripping though. Other than that I make it a point to be ready for most things all the time and my work in construction is a big help. I already have generators , a chain saw, tarps and all the other emergency stuff all the time. As for water the entire area here was designed to be gravity feed from reservoirs I do have some but I have never seen the supply disrupted. For power like I said I have two generators I use for work and I am on the same grid as the local hospital. Our mayor has urged people in the flood prone areas right on the beach to evacuate and put numbers on the wind gust reach 55mph nobody will come out :zombiefuck: Where they come up with these numbers I have no idea but 55mph gusts is nothing.

Unless you're trying to fight a fire with the possibility of live wires coming down around you and storm debris being blown about. Ditto for EMT and police. Most of the time they send the fire trucks out of harm's way ahead of time. Losing one to flood or storm damage is way expensive and inconvenient.
-
It won't hit you?
We're still in the projected path but since it's going back and forth it's hard to say. Still expecting flooding since the area already waterlogged.

when i had my own place i had emergency stuff on hand all the time. we have a crank radio and flashlight in florida. here my mom doesn't even know where her flashlights are. at least we did the water, which i need because i have developed some thing where i sweat when the temp is above 21C.

I will be spending Saturday battening down the hatches. Eye is supposed to go over or just past east of my work so just 35 miles from my house. Supposed to be weak category 2 or strong Category 1 as she goes through us. In-laws are in Virginia Beach and won't come here. Their house is on the Elizabeth River. The Navy pulled all their ships out. My base is on Level 1 Tropical Cyclone Alert. We spent today unplugging and covering everything up. Record rainfalls this month will lead to a lot downed trees. Hell, yesterday we had a massive storm unrelated to Irene bring 6" and 55 mph winds. Power was out all over. We happened to be on the right side of the grid outage. Moving westward will weaken her for NJ, NY, and all my online friends in CT, RI, and MA. Only expected to be Tropical Storm in the Northeast. Bunch of pussies! After surviving Andrew, I ain't worried. With Irene and the 5 eartquakes so far centered 23 miles from my house, plus last night's storm, people here all end of the world crazy.
-
I don't know. People have the right to be afraid of this one since already everything is so wet. Some are saying the NYC mayor is trying to make up for being caught with his pants down for the blizzard. Though you can't pick and choose with the subways - I would close the ones that run outside just to keep the idiots away.
They are closing the Bronx River Parkway at 6pm tomorrow with good justification. There is an underpass there that gets deep enough to drown someone and it floods that way with only heavy rain.
People went nuts here buying bottled water. I couldn't tell whether we have pumps or gravity so we filled a couple gallons. tomorrow if it looks bad we really will fill the bathtub, because flushing is important to me.
This would be my third hurricane in this area, so if it stays a hurricane I'd say at least a little worry is justified.
I just got a new camera so I may go out and try for some cloud pics.

They are out in worse a lot the only difference is this is a named storm. He mentioned 55 mph gusts not sustained wind also we had 60+ mph gust last week and actually get them fairly regularly by the beach.
-
Actually they are saying the winds will be sustained.
Irene was just downgraded to a category 1. If it makes landfall in NC they are saying that will weaken it.
And they are saying the real problem is what I have been saying - stupid people doing stupid things and clearing out the gene pool.
-
Thinking of you guys in the next few days and wishing you and your families safe and hoping your lives are as least affected by its passing as can be hoped.
-
Our mayor said if the gusts are over 55 they will not go out, I would understand sustained winds but even so it was close to that during one of the blizzards and they were all over the place. I think we will get the usual, some flooding and trees down with some beach erosion thrown in for good measure.
My town is one of the places local news crews set up for these things :2thumbsup:

She's weakened more. With the exception of the aforementioned idiots doing stupid things, not much to worry about. Some downed trees due to already being saturated, local flooding in low-lying areas, and some power loss here and there. So long as we don't get another earthquake here and the ground opens up and swallows us like in the movies I think we'll survive.

I checked the weather report, and it is to the east a few hundred ( not many ) miles. We are expected to just get thunderstorms. I remember back in 05 there was a devastating hurricane where I live - which is pracically unheard of. Weather is acting strange the past few decades.
I AM , however, worried about you lot. Some of you are right in the eye of the storm.
be careful
-
Here is the projected path
(http://i.huffpost.com/gen/338293/HURRICANE-IRENE-PATH-2011-NOAA.jpg)
-
My town is insane. They announced if there is any delay in the start of school due to the storm they will post it on their web site and reverse 911 then almost like it was an after thought they said and the radio, so how are we supposed to get on to it if the power is out besides the radio?
They are also boarding all the windows on the central fire department for the first time I have seen in the twenty plus years I have lived here. All this for a storm that we have already had worse countless times. I would even venture to say at least one of the storms we had over the winter was and with that we had 18+ inches of snow also.
I am not saying the weather coming is nothing but the response to it has been so overblown at least where I am it's maddening. Sure people should be ready but they should always somewhat ready as some of the worst recent weather was pretty much without warning. I fear with all the hype it will make people think that is all it is when it really matters. I mean fuck they already as of noon shut down all the trains and it has not even started raining yet. The governor of my state is already talking about national guard troops.
-
I was just outside in an outer band. Wind steady around 10-15 with slightly higher gusts. Constant light rain. I took in all the stuff on my porch and the kids' toys and put them in the garage, but left the heavy metal table and chairs on the deck along with the gas grill, but I positioned them more securely. I also moved my cars to be out of the way of falling trees. It actually passes just east of us in the middle of the night, so you can imagine how big these things get as we are already feeling her.
@eris - Yeah, that one angled right through us and up into PA. We had a lot of damage out where I work.
-
Already a much heavier rain band with slightly higher winds. Went to get mail and got soaked.
-
Oh shit, are the mainstream media just having a field day with this or what? :zoinks:

Shifted more west. Stupid in-laws are getting the northern and eastern edges. Trees down and power out across Hampton Roads. Heavy red on radar is hitting them. We are starting to get yellow and orange bands. Still nothing compared to Andrew where we had 200+ gusts and sustained upper 100s for a very long time.
Now the eye may pass right over us and my work will get the eastern edge. My building may not have a roof, which will be okay by me. I don't go back to the office until Friday, although my trip to Boston Monday is in limbo.

I know where that is, but don't know that idiot. Needs to do some serious manscaping. Was there even a penis in there?

We had a pretty wicked band an hour ago. I moved up family movie night to this afternoon in case the power goes out tonight. We watched Rio, which was a present I got my little minion for birthday number 5 Thursday. Wind and rain were rocking the hous a bit during the movie. It was calm for a bit, but has picked up and a really heavy rain is coming down now. My front yard is flooded. Don't worry! My house is on a hill and my front yard is more a dirt hill sloping down into the ditch alongside the road. VB is expecting water levels to be 15 ft above normal. While inland about 10 miles, my in-laws backyard is beginning to fload as the Elizabeth River rises from the tidal surge pushing inland. Their den is sunken and on the back-middle of the house. Doesn't bode well.
-
My husband's parents in North Carolina lost power, but it's already been restored. A few trees are down, but it's pretty much OK there other than trees and power lines.
-

Good to hear!
After another strong band it is now calmer. Sometimes the waiting is the worst. Just give it to us already and stop teasing us. Typical female! Flaunt it and entice us, then take it away and leave us blue in the balls.

It was bad in my part of the Carolinas. I got a sunburn cutting the grass. Wait, maybe that is a wind burn.........

They've added a tornado watch for us. They are opening a shelter here tomorrow. I hope we do as well as NC. People are reporting an eerie quality, but that is because the town is closed on a Saturday night. The mayor ordered businesses closed by 9pm.

Yeah, just saw the tornado warning. We are under a Flash Flood Warning. Some roads are flooded. She has already weakened to a low Category 1. Evacuating Coastal CT seems stupid accept houses right on the ocean.

They didn't explain what they would do but it has been largely ignored from what my son who just got in told me. They made announcement over the public address system they have set up for it I could hear it here. I for one would like to see them take me out of my house when I didn't want to leave. Before anyone says anything about putting the people who will come to rescue you at risk I would go as far as signing a paper telling them to leave me where I am till after the storm

pouring rain here but we won't be ordered to evacuate.
trying to get my grading done before some idiot runs into a pole and cuts off our power.

I certainly appreciate any concern headed my way. Raining pretty hard and more consistent now. Rather large gusts now too. I am guessing 25 mph. Minions just went to bed and all have their own flashlights. In Portsmouth, where I was by default born at the Naval Hospital, an 11-year old was killed when a tree broke in two and smashed the corner of the house where his room was. You just don't know.
-
Wow, that sucks. I spent the Summer of 1978 there while in FRAMP School @ VAQ33 NAS Norfolk. We had a hurricane watch or warning but nothing landed. The kid's family must be devastated.

And I had just moved from CT to VB and was living in Charlestown Lakes in 1978.

My sister was living in Houston when a tropical storm hit (can't remember the name, sometime in the mid 90's?) They didn't have any problem with the wind, BUT the damn thing stalled for about 5 days. They had 18 wheelers floating in the streets. So it's not only the wind you have to worry about it's the rain, tidal surge, tornadoes, etc. Our house was nearly hit by a tornado from Hurricane Hilda; it hit 3 houses down. I had 2 elderly cousins who drowned in Katrina in an affluent neighborhood. Why they didn't leave I don't know, maybe they didn't have a way out.
Trigger11 - I saw the picture of the damaged house where the young boy died. Even being in a house doesn't guarantee your safety.
AFAIK the authorities don't have the authority to make you leave your house, at least in Louisiana. But, I know if it's heading our way we leave because of the Princess Royal's disabilities.
-
i live in florida. i am only visiting here, though i did grow up nearby.
we have thunder and lightning here and tornado sightings south of here. still pouring rain and the wind is picking up a little more. streets flooded in the low lying areas south of here.

CNN has real good coverage of this event.
FoxNews is blaming Obama for the damage.
MSNBC is not sure, but is confident the democrats had nothing to do with it.

Very windy at the moment with heavy rain. The wind sounds like trucks driving by when it gusts

be safe. :-\

A branch just fell across the street from my neighbors yard. I am listening the the fire department on the radio and lot's of branches and trees down many in the wires. Might loose power soon even it it's just for the power companies to fix it. I think all new houses and roads should have underground lines like when I live in Florida
-
We've got tropical storm winds - 25 mph here. Jersey City is closed. Any way into Connecticut is closed.
Seems to me it makes sense to close the roads so idiots don't get into the dangerous areas. Wow - mudslides and floods already and we haven't had high tide yet.
Lots of leaves down here, but the sewers seem to have cleared. There was one that overflowed last night. The room where I am staying is over the boiler room and the window faces a direction from which wind never comes and I am getting the occasional breeze.
Given Trigger11's experience I will remain watchful.
-
Just surveyed...lot of branches down and leaves everywhere. One medium-sized branch had hit the side of the house and made a loud sound, but I didn't see any damage just now checking it.
-
So far, just heavy rain here, but I will remain alert! :viking:

Glad to see folks checking in. It's weirdly cold here, down to 10C at times due to the wind.
Our major roads are flooding and parts of Manhattan are under a heck of a lot of water (8 feet).
Some of the flooded roads were not closed but now they are.

Lots and lots of fire trucks and trucks with cranes and other equipment have been going by all day. Lots of sirens, too. The wind is blowing stuff around and the ground is covered with leaves and debris. People are starting to get on the streets. There must be stuff open.
-
It never rained, and I just looked at the forecast and it said partly cloudy chance of rain only 10%.
hmm..

It's just raining here, off and on. I don't know whether we're going to get clobbered tonight or what! :dunno:
-
My area had several brief power blips, but, nothing much more then that......<knock on wood> Not much rain right now, still some gusty winds. We seem to have avoided the worst of the storm. Areas out west got pounded. Over 100,000 people are without power in NH alone. I know that's a fraction of what the south got. But, for NH thats a high percentage. The real flood problems are happening in Vermont and the Border areas of NH/VT. All emergency crews are still on alert till later tonight. I've been cat napping all day in case of an all nighter coming up.

Just got back from getting my car - it was in the municipal garage. some real close calls - a tree fell at the entrance to the garage and some guy's car got crushed less than a block away from my mom's house. trees down all over the place. i'll put pics in parts' pic thread.

I hope everyone lacking electricity gets it back soon. :viking:

Hopefully power & internet are restored soon. Glad everyone is otherwise okay though.

Oh shit, are the mainstream media just having a field day with this or what? :zoinks:
Fortunately there is this thing called math that can be used to support or refute claims of improper media coverage.

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) told supporters God was sending a message to Washington politicians through the earthquake and hurricane that pummeled the East Coast this weekend, according to a report in the St. Petersburg Times. The hurricane killed more than 26 people, including at least two chidren.
While giving a speech about the merits of small government and tea party activism, Bachmann said:
I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.
ROFLMAO

"God save the Queen" could have a lot of different meanings in this context.
Are there homosexuals in Canada?

Not in the Winter. Their butts are frozen shut. It's God's way of discouraging buggery.

Still no power. There are two poles and three large trees down at the end of my street The flooding was very bad by the beach but it always is the water came up to within three feet of the end of my road where the marsh is. Post more later when power comes back up though not sure how much a priority we are atm as the break is close to us and on a dead end road and the isolated us from the hospital circuit

I sympathize, I've heard lower priority is given to residents of rural or isolated areas. :thumbdn:

We're one of those "low-priorities" too. Hopefully they get you restored sooner than they did me in the last snowstorm. :P

My work and the surrounding area was out of power yesterday, but I was traveling so I didn't get Administrative Leave.
-
Back on I have power and cable. The end of my road was a mess they worked on it for two days straight and seem to be still wrapping up down there. If it had not been so close to my house it would have been much quicker as we are very close to the hospital but they cut the power just before my road. Still parts of town are out by the beach it's a real mess have some photos to post later

glad you're back on the grid. i flew out of ny yesterday and the airport was nearly empty by comparison with other times. even the flight to orlando had empty seats which is totally unusual for just before labor day.
near my mom's house they are still chopping and shredding and they haven't touched the mudslides at all.
