If someone invented a technology that allowed for 100% detection of crimes and automatically created a huge database of every crime committed by every person in the world, what would happen to society? Given the enormous numbers of drug users, would the prison system implode? Would drugs be legalised once their huge popularity and the extent of their use by respected members of society was revealed? Would the world's politicians be decimated by a vast wave of arrests and popular uprisings as their crimes were revealed?
If such a technology ever was invented, I suspect the people in power would keep it very tightly under their control, to be accessed and used by them only. It might help them to destroy political opponents, but it would be useless for controlling the population unless it was used very selectively, as there would be too many people to arrest otherwise.
It would be interesting if multiple countries possessed their own global crime detection systems and could publish the crimes of each other's leaders. Would the public care enough to do anything about it? If France published a list of the crimes committed by US politicians, how many Americans would even believe it?
What penalties would you be liable for if there was a database file of all your crimes? I suspect I could get at least a few years of prison time.

they would have to legalize weed at least. and prolly codeine and valium.

I would probably have to pay fines for some speeding tickets.
;D
-
And I have a few parking tickets, in addition to the speeding tickets...
-
I'm not listing them all. THEY might be watching. :ninja:
-
i've never been naughty. :orly:

I would hate to go to prison, and that would be my fate if everything I ever did was detected lol.
-
i would hate to go to prison as well. i don't want someone shoving their hand up my arse to see if i'm hiding drugs and phones.
-
Everyone would be locked up. There would be no-one out there.

crazy to shove a phone up your butt.
-
very crazy. they have a chair now that detects if you have a phone up your arse.

I must have that chair.

does it stick a hand in there?
-
i think it detects metal inside you or something lol
i saw it on the news yesterday
-
5 years from now it will be detected to give ass cancer.

here it is

just looks like a normal chair lol
-
I always carry my cell phone in my anus it keeps it nice and warm :P
If such a machine as you describe I think they would have to build safe zones instead of prisons because most people have done something. Just think of all the copy write infringement on the net.
-
they still search for drugs. >:(

:o
My daughter would set it off, since she has metal wires holding her sternum together because of her open heart surgery, and they say that a paper clip would set it off.
What about people with metal fillings in their teeth?
Wouldn't it have been a better idea to make wire mesh Faraday cages surrounding the prisons and disable cell phone signals coming in?
-
My nephew has a metal plate in his hand and was surprised he didn't set any of the detectors off when he went on a plane. I think it my depend on the type of metal as well as the mass

You could install shielding while building new prisons, but it would be extremely difficult to retrofit existing prisons. If the conductive cladding was on the inside, inmates could remove it, and it would be impractical and enormously expensive to apply it externally. They also can't jam the signals because a lot of prisons are in towns and cities where jamming would interfere with people outside the prison.
-
My phone works for shit inside as it is. You could locally jam cell phones without to much affect on the community. I used to jam my neighbors radio when he had it on too loud with a small transmitter I made it only worked over about 100 feet. And yes that would be one of my crimes also

On second thought,
they'd probably just

That is the best part. Someone could sit in it while visiting my house and not know I am screening them for cramming a phone in their colon. I could then tell them to leave or embarass them for having a cell phone in their ass. Imagine yelling at someone to GTFO your house when you find out they are bum smuggling a cellphone.

precrime doesn't work

And Minority Report sucked. :P

I'd want to detect lesser criminals too.
Not just 100% ones.
