Suit against PC renter raises privacy questions
Quote
PITTSBURGH – You didn't pay your bill. We need our computer back. And here's a picture of you typing away on it, the computer rental company told a client as it tried to repossess the machine.

Those allegations appear in a federal lawsuit alleging that the firm, Atlanta-based Aaron's Inc., loaded computers with spyware to track renters' keystrokes, make screenshots and even take webcam images of them using the devices at home. The suit filed by a Wyoming couple Tuesday raises anew questions of how invasive custodians of technology should be in protecting their equipment.

Computer privacy experts said Aaron's, a major furniture rental chain, has the right to equip its computers with software it can use to shut off the devices remotely if customers stop paying their bills, but they must be told if they're being monitored.

Hope nobody is using one of there machines here :zombiefuck:  This is just wrong how can they even remotely thing this was a good idea.

That is horrible, although I can't believe anybody would choose to rent a computer. I kinda feel computers are private. I'd hate to have people able to see everything I'd used my computer for :)

The state probably does. It will do here in Sweden beginning the next year, if the bastards don't do it already. There have been some delays, although the law partially went in effect on the 1st of January 2009: FRA law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FRA_law)

a 300$ laptop is like 999$ there, and then they charge you 15$ a month just because.

That whole place is a scam.

All those rent to own places are.  Ever notice they set them up in poor areas where the people have few other choices.  It's a rather scummy business IMO

15 dollars a month? Try 200 dollars a month (for 24 months), for a laptop not worth more than 600 dollars. From Ripoff-A-Center.

As far as I am concerned, this is a victim-less crime. Anyone with half a fucking brain should know that rent-to-own deals are nothing but legal scams. In fact, I think these idiots full well deserve to have their privacy infringed like that because they have no common sense and don't deserve any dignity, let alone any refunds nor lawsuit settlements. Fuck them. And fuck all rent-to-own places.

Not to mention that Hulk Hogan is a piece of shit who should be burnt to death. Along with John Madden. :thumbdn:

yes it cost about 150$ a month for about a year for a laptop, and 200$ for a desktop. I worked at an Aarons for years.

I mean there is a 15$ a month charge "just because you are renting"

Seems strange someone would pay so much per month for a computer rather than saving that money for three or four months and buying one.

Well, I think it's more that you said that poor, stupid people dont deserve dignity and should be spied on.

What if they like got dressed in front of their computer ? OR it was in their bedrooms and it was near where they have sex with their wife ?

I dont think anyone deserves that.

i guess I could be part of this whole mess too and shouldn't deserve anything because I used to work there and contributed to the problem, but the truth is I just worked there cause I needed to pay the rent, and some people rent computers cause they dont have 400$ at once.

It's sad what some people do to themselves, but its just sad, I dont feel spiteful towards them.

Something like a kid was eating jellybeans, but being a stupid teenager about it as acted like it was drugs, so they confronted him in school for using drugs and he was like WTF HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT

It was cause they were spying on his school laptop in his home.

I dont see how spying on anyone like this could be legal

I mean, c'mon guys, everyone does a little "private time" in front of the computer, especially teenagers. Imaging all the CP that school would have

Its sickens me really. SOME people have access to that, like administration or whatever... pictures little kids getting naked and such ,even young girls getting ready for school !!!

 Should be imprisonment !

Can see how someone might not be interested in bankrupting a public school. Shouldn't have been about money at all, except maybe covering legal fees, but rather privacy laws. 400 images is two weeks; someone was perving on that kid pretty hard. Didn't see where anyone even lost their job, much less received any jail time.

If someone lost their job over it, it probably would have been handled quietly, like a teacher being strongly encouraged to take an early retirement, because there are teacher's unions who will back their teachers no matter what.

When I had the job as a bus assistant, I was strongly encouraged to join a union for bus drivers and assistants.  I was told that if I joined and then was ever sued for any reason having to do with my job, the union would hire a lawyer for me.  The school district would give me legal representation to the extent I acted as their agent, so if I was acting within my job description, I would be covered by the school district, so I didn't join the union.

When the special education teacher physically abused my daughter by putting soap in her mouth and then choking her, she was not acting within the scope of her employment and therefore could have been sued personally, but we didn't sue because what we wanted was to get our daughter the hell away from this special education teacher and the school, which had become associated with some horrible memories for her.

I heard that she finally took an early retirement, but no, not from us, anyway.

My daughter wanted us to go to her house, kidnap her, take her to a judge, and force her to tell the truth about what she did to her.

Of course the teacher lied through her teeth and said that she didn't do anything wrong.

We found a better school, or actually four better schools now, but she hasn't gotten over the abuse after seven years.  She's still afraid that her new teachers will hurt her, so she lashes out at them.  She can't even bear for us to drive by her old school, which is about a half mile from our house.

We considered pursuing it in court, but our daughter was seven years old and most people couldn't understand her when she talked, so she wouldn't have made a good witness and the abuse apparently happened only when the two of them were alone, so there weren't any other witnesses and it was just our daughter's word against a special education teacher's word.

I went to school with my daughter every day (as a sort of bodyguard) for the rest of the school year after the teacher choked her and we insisted that the school district move her to a different school when we finally were able to meet with them.

I had been frantically searching for a better school for our daughter, but the fact that she had an IEP that had to be followed made finding a better school for her difficult because many places wouldn't take her.  We considered moving to the attendance zone of the elementary school in the district we considered the best for her needs, but the district agreed to move her.
