I've noticed that every aspie board I've been to has a disproportionate amount of libertarians. This makes sense, in some ways. I thought maybe reactivating the libertarian club at my school might be a good opportunity to meet other aspie-ish people, among other things. Not sure that I can maintain an interest in politics from any place in the traditional spectrum, but then again I'm not confident I know enough to do something like this. On the other hand, this would be the time for it, because the Democratic National Convention is going to be here next year.
Who on this board is a libertarian (either member of a party or not?)
-
I am not registered as such but my views generally are more inline with them than not
-
Occasionally. The US libertarians tend to
be less what they purport to be, and more
simply more radical Republicans, in a lot of
cases. Certainly was the case in NY, where
there was a definite advantage to suborning
the minor parties. :-\

They give libertarians a bad name in my opinion. I have met more than few though
-
only met one libertarian, he was a republican gunnut moneyhungry asshole.
but i'm a libertarian socially. just no financially or gunwise.

I don't know if I am one or not.

If money is a form of free speech (as declared by
the US supreme court), why not guns?
Vive Le Revolution!

Im a libertine; probably would be a libertarian if i had a vast amount of property to protect though.

I am a Libertarian both socially and economically. If I wasn't, then I wouldn't be a Libertarian at all.

I am a card carrying member of the libertarian party.

I don't have a card from them :( Have one from the ACLU though

I'm fairly libertarian in philosophy but don't think much of the USA libertarian party.

What annoys you about Libertarians specifically? I really don't pay much attention to the Ron Paul hype around campus, but he is pushed heavily. I would not say that all of his views are Libertarian, but he has some.
-
I am essentially a social libertarian, i.e. an anarchist. the economic libertarian position is abhorrent to me - its basically seeking the right to be utterly selfish and fuck everyone else, like we don't really have to function as a society or have any moral obligation to help those less fortunate than ourselves. its the naked capitalist impulse. :puke:
-
Libertarians AREN'T anarchists. They believe that
some minimal set of protections are necessary.
-
Libertarian Socialists are. Truth be told, that's probably more in my direction.
-
yes i'm a socialist libertarian. individual freedoms. economic libertarianism is disgusting.
-
Libertarian Socialists are. Truth be told, that's probably more in my direction.
Certainly NOT. Enforced redistribution
of wealth has nothing in common with
anarchy.
Thing is, anarchy can't really exist. It
collapses. Power collates.
-
what is anarchy?
-
I tend to define it as a state without rules.
Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchy) uses
the following:
# "Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder."[1]
# "A theoretical social state in which there is no governing person or body of persons, but each individual has absolute liberty (without the implication of disorder)."[2]
# "Absence or non-recognition of authority and order in any given sphere
Probably the 2nd meaning is what people are aiming
for, but it is clearly impossible. At least with anything
like modern mores.
-
i think of anarchy as an absense of the need for rules. when people reach full consciousness they will do the right thing because they want to.

Hey man. I took Poly sci 1000 you can't fool me. Socialism doesn't have to be enforced and if it's anarchy it can't be. Anarchy can exist man it's an inevitability.
-

Exactly as I take it. Some sort of utopian state,
requiring that humanity undergo a fundamental
change, before it's possible.
But, I think small groups CAN achieve such
a status. Everyone has to care deeply about
everyone else though - something I can't see
in any larger construct.

No? How then do you prevent people
from taking advantage of one another?
Even in the most egalitarian groups, there
is almost always SOME form of enforcement,
even though it could only be social status.
And yes, Anarchy IS inevitable. As a short term
collapsed state always shows. Whenever things
go to hell, that's your anarchy. Then, some strong
man comes in, and seizes power - perhaps making things
worse, but at least more predictable.
-
People will change man.
-
Yeah. When the aliens come.
They haven't managed it in millenia,
why now, otherwise?
-
they've been preparing for a millenia, sweetheart. :P
-
That's not what I meant. I meant that
people haven't changed. Aliens come when
they come. Though, with all the anal probing,
you'd think they'd have managed it. :-\
-
I'd consider myself a Libertarian... with a dash of Marxism and Machiavellianism thrown in to boot.
BTW, this should've been a poll.

Fuck.. I just realized I mispelled librarians

people are of limited consciousness,
the aliens are here to give us our strands back.
our DNA strands were severed, all but three.
that is why we now have three strand DNA.
we used to have 12 strands.
all our chakras were functional,
many of them were shut down
when our strands were severed,
now they are being activated,
and our strands connected.
the greys probably did the anal probing.
they are a different race.
the Pleiadians whisked them away
to stop them from experimenting on us.

aliens don't cum though. :(

Try again. You're just not doing it
right, if you're not making them orgasm.

:'( i tried.

Practice on me. :eyebrows:

you're easy.

For you.

you are? :P

Come here, and I'll show you. :eyebrows:

gladly. :eyebrows:

If only.

:indeed:
-
Hell, you'd not even let me visit. :-\
-
i wish i could. i'm too fucked up. :(
-
That's okay, I'm too fucked up to
manage to visit my folks.
-
me too. i can't visit anybody anymore.
-
If it weren't complicated, I could do it.
Just the act of buying a ticket, knowing that
I'll be stuck there for a specified amount of time.
That kills.
-
i can't buy a ticket. i'd have to do something new. and yeah i hate complicatedness.
-
I don't mind flying or traveling in general. I am going to my friend Doug's wedding in January most likely before the semester starts. He is getting married in Nashville, TN (that is where his fiancee is from). I am not sure when the next time we go up to Boston to visit my relatives up there is but that happens every year or so too. They come down to visit us fairly often as well.

3000 miles by land sucks though.
I miss people's distress.
-
libertarians tend to piss me off
-
What aspect of them irritates you?
-
they have certain aspects that remind me of conservatives. i especially hate when they defend racism.
-
I hate the way that they sush you,
when you're just chatting about books.
-
i'd be a librarian gladly. if i didn't despise being around people and touching used things. :P
i would never shush people i find hot though. :P
-
I was a librarian for two years in collage used to get high before going in

I believe people can say whatever they want and would defend even a racist in having that right to express it but vigorously prosecute them if they act on it in a way that harms people

Freedom of speech is vital.
-
i like the library but i hate it when there are people in there who are diseased and keep sniffing and sneezing and coughing. jesus it pisses me the fuck off. and people who come in there with their friends and talk. fucking hell shut up you bastards. and when someone is sat in my seat at the back of the reference-only section. i mean what the fuck is with that? that's clearly my seat, i sit there every day, get the fuck out.
-
i would wear glasses and my hair in a bun and i would mark Soph's reading space as for Soph and Axolotls only and then i'd take Calandale in the broom closet. :eyebrows:

and we would take Soph too.

And shush her, if she makes too much noise.

you could be an honorary librarian. :toporly: access to shush powers.
-
I already have the means to shush someone. :eyebrows:
-
shush me and i'll make a broom cover out of you.
-
You'd still be able to gurgle.
-
ORLY? :orly:
-
Though, my wife learned to talk,
mostly intelligibly, around it.
-
i'd have the Jack mumbles. :P

Practice dear.

I miss the library
-
Same here. Haven't been, since
before I stopped being a student.
-
I haven't been since last week.
-
im a independent. im fortunate enough to not belong to any political party and no independent is not a political party

It is in NY.

i voted for Labour. that's the only election i've been able to vote in so far. local elections last year or whenever it was. fucking tories won.

I had to look up Libertarian on Wikipedia. We don't really use that word in Britain any more.
According to Wiki, it means so many different things in the US that it covers practically the entire polital spectrum. Including Anarchism.
Looks like an utterly useless word, except maybe for conmen who want to ingratiate themselves with you, before they know what your political views are :(.
-
As the American liberal and the European liberal tent to mean completely different things, not every libertarian in the us and a is a con or a dickhole.
Listen to some of the thing Penn has to say about libertarianism in America. The more stable minded here simply believe in minimum government, and maximum freedom.
-
As the American liberal and the European liberal tent to mean completely different things, not every libertarian in the us and a is a con or a dickhole.
That's not what I was saying.
I was saying that the word can be twisted to mean almost anything. Therefore it's worse-than- useless, as a word, to anybody except the sort of person who likes to twist things.
Obviously, plenty of totally honest people use the word too, but that doesn't seem wise. Far too easily misunderstood.
-
I was saying that the word can be twisted to mean almost anything.
Any word can be twisted to mean almost anything. It all depends what is IS. :tard: :wanker:

Just to be clear. was finding fault with the word , not you. I don't understand why it's such a big deal, unless you've taken my observation personally, for some reason . I basically found it amusing that usage has given the word so many contradictory meanings. it's been ruined for most communication purposes.
Before I looked that word up, I thought it meant something specific, politically. I thought I even knew what specific thing it meant. ( I was right, in a way. My idea of what it means was listed, along with other things that totally surprised me) That's the problem. I'm not alone there. Most other people seem to think it has one narrow specific meaning , as well.
I don't mind vague, general words on the whole. We could sit round a campfire, sing kumbayaaa, and cosily observe that "We're all libertarians" . I'm personally fine with that. But then that wouldn't quite work in the same way as "We're all human", would it? Presumably half the people so adressed would be offended, because the word has too narrow a definition in their neck of the woods. It could work out worse than declaring "We're all gay"
But now it turns out to be equaly offensive to call it a rubbish sort of word.
Wow! The word has impenetrable armour as well as all sorts of concealed weaponry.
I meant nothing personal whatsoever, except to observe that you're better off calling yourself an Anarchist , if you want to me (or anyone) to understand what you mean . And since I actually like Anarchists, that's no sort of insult, in my book. You'll know about it, if and when I decide to insult you. It won't be hidden in semantics.
-

Yes, I got that.
I think you slightly missed the issue though. I don't think that there's a problem with the word Libertarian in and of itself, rather I think it's just a blanket term that covers a wide spectrum of beliefs. The same thing goes for Anarchism, that covers a wide spectrum of beliefs and there is a fair amount of overlap between libertarianism and anarchism. This doesn't render the words meaningless though, it just means that if you claim to be one or the other, for the sake of clarity, you should specify which branch you identify with.

Have always understood libertarian views to be based in a belief of there's no need for laws which only protect people from themselves. Seatbelt laws for children, yes; seatbelt laws for adults, no.
-
I was saying that the word can be twisted to mean almost anything.
First of all, DrunkardsWalk needs to come back.
Second, I think Libertarianism just means someone who is opposed to Authoritarianism, whatever form it may take.
I think you have to be equally opposed to big government and big corporations since both are consolidations of money and power.

On topic though - I would be closer to a libertarian socialist as I'm pro "do whatever the hell you want" eg. pro free speech, take whatever drugs you want, pro gun ownership, LGBTQ normalcy etc, but I do believe some level of governance is needed to ensure a fair and democratic system is in place, along with socialist ideals like universal healthcare, education, worker co-ops etc.
At the same time, I think some limitations are needed like hate speech laws (or alternatively, make it socially unacceptable to be a racist dickbag regardless), to ensure the maximum amount of people have their right to speak. This would obviously not apply to some random reactionary having a bit of a racist opinion online, but people advocating or showing a clear intent to commit violence, consistent harassment etc. which goes beyond a simple difference in opinion.
