There were hundreds of those towns though.

If you asked random Americans to name a gold rush town, you would get Sutters Mill or something like that.

It is.  My daughter loves their hot springs pool.  I think that was the fourth time we have gone there.  The first time, we took the train from Denver and stayed at the Hotel Colorado.  This last time, we camped near there because she had never camped anywhere other than a back yard before.

Name this town ^

Bonus points if you can say:
* What is the town most famous for?
* What huge corporation was founded in this town?
* A reboot to which series of movies was supposed to be filmed near this town a few years back?

Your question #3 helped me solve this. it's the Mad Max reboot, I think. My Google search suggests new South Wales somewhere. Broken Hill?
Title: Re: Name that town.
Post by: Minister Of Silly Walks on July 14, 2019, 05:51:38 PM
Well done Odeon.

It is Broken Hill, NSW.

The 2nd original Mad Max movie was filmed near Broken Hill. The plan was to film the reboot near Broken Hill. But just as filming was due to start they got some heavy rain and the surrounding land apparently looked like the Welsh countryside. So cast, crew, vehicles, equipment, props etc were flown to Namibia.

The world's biggest mining company started in Broken Hill. BHP: Broken Hill Proprietary. Broken Hill is colloquially called the Silver City.
Title: Re: Name that town.
Post by: odeon on July 15, 2019, 01:59:57 AM
That mining company is mostly unknown to me. I might have heard the name. Maybe.
Title: Re: Name that town.
Post by: Minister Of Silly Walks on July 15, 2019, 02:07:42 AM
Well Odeon, BHP is pretty obscure. I mean it's only the biggest mining company in the world (by market capitalisation). $144B.

But most people don't wander around thinking "I wonder what the biggest mining company in the world is right now?".

We know about it in Australia because they run ads telling us how wonderful they are.
