Title: Numbers
Post by: 'andersom' on January 24, 2014, 12:55:25 PM
I need to make this topic, because the number of the amount of topics annoys me. 16660.

With this topic, I have fixed the problem, for now.

And this thread now can be the place to mention when numbers make you do things or make you to not do things.

It looks better, at the bottom of the site.

I wonder how long it will last though, this carefully forged balance.

Be inspired, combine postwhoring and making new topics.

If you are uninspired, there must be topics that are too long, and in need of a second volume.

NOAH'S ARK

Everything we need to know, you can learn from Noah's Ark.

ONE:  Don't miss the boat.
TWO:  Remember that we are all in the same boat!
THREE:  Plan Ahead.  It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
FOUR:  Stay fit.  When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
FIVE:  Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
SIX:  Build your future on high ground.
SEVEN:  For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
EIGHT:  Speed isn't always an advantage.  The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
NINE:  When you're stressed, float a while.
TEN:  Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
ELEVEN:  No matter the storm, there's always a rainbow waiting.

Reflexives are fun and easy to recognize.

... but bilateral, semi-symmetrical notations of numbers or letters make it hard for me to tell which end is up and which end is first. I get "stymied" reading them frontwards and backwards (which I always do with everything I see, but if they are the same, such as palindromes) I am lost for a few seconds while I figure out that I am looking at a kind of palindrome.

Imagine how embarrassing it is to see a SKU number at work like 1458541 (did not make that up, but had to deal with that one a few days ago, while live on radio to a co-worker) and I can NOT tell you what it says. IF it reads the same front to back and back to front, I have trouble knowing what the symbols are telling me.

Dyslexia or Hyperlexia? Doc does not know, either.

Somehow numbers like that give me a joy, next to a full stop.
I had a student number 109601, typing it down, it stops me again. It is awesome, because it is the same upside down.
Have had most numbers identifying me at lectures or schools to be symmetrical. I liked it. But yes, it does stop me, for a few seconds and a smile.

Am I the only one who has to read everything both ways to get the meaning of the words or a sequence of numbers? Algebra and calculus are difficult for me, but I get them. More advanced math is a bit more trying, but I struggle through.

Seriously? How can I be the only one?!?

Can be overly analytical with words in this way. It can be both a good and bad thing, so try to not do it too much.

Was talking about the relationship between one and three. One divided by three is point infinite three. Ten divided by three is three point infinite three. One hundred divided by three is thirty-three point infinite three, and so on...

Also like three because for any number equally divisible by three, the individual digits of that number add up to a sum which is also equally divisible by three. Also unique.

The decimal is one repeating, which is almost as good. :P
Almost as good as three is not as good as three. :M

Nine is three with an extra three multiplied in. :P

A math inclined person I'm not, and am unlikely ever TO be. Never got other than in an abstract modality, how people can find numbers and math beautiful or inspiring. Other than 'thats just how the fuckers are wired up'

Always HATED math in school, absolutely couldn't stand it. I strongly suspect I am dyscalculic, fairly majorly so in fact.

Generally, I am to mathematics, what a fish is to a bicycle:P

Only not remotely such a pretty picture (of course *I* am, but my math ability really, really isn't.)

I picked a mighty odd set of autie interest fields to adopt, didn't I now..particle physics, quantum mechanics, chem/bio and computer (in)security, along with a vast heap of other scientific fields added in alongside (although in truth, my introduction to a passion for science, was botany and mycology, both low-math intensive disciplines, at about age 4 or so. Although I think given the way I've learned autodidactically as a preference, and keep doing so, some tendency towards the sciences must be hardcoded in me)

But all downhill from there :D

Probably not.  It was a combination of a delay in giving her meds and food plus the necessity of keeping the TV on because of the weather warnings.

Honestly, one of my challenges revolves around my having to read everything forward and backward before I can make sense of it.

Palindromes throw me off and I have to read it again and again. (I asked Callaway to remove thousands of my posts because I saw a devastating palindrome approaching in my post count. I was not able to look the other way. So my post count is off by a bit)

It does not always fuck me up, but the other night my car's odometer reading reached 12021 while I was in a drive through service.

I was stymied. I could not figure what to do next. This shit happens. I was "almost"  Stopped until the server asked what else I needed. I finally gathered myself and asked for extra napkins,  put the car in gear again and started moving.  My wife asked, "What were you doing?"
She knowws, but she does not always recognize things.

Palindromes or numbers that are the same when upside down somehow follow me.

109601 was my student number. Loved it.
11 was my examn number in secondary school. 121 in university.

Pass numbers, phonenumbers, some of them have been palindromes or numbers that could be turned upside down and still be the same.

Funny, ex got a few angry phonecalls, because he answered with his name and not with the name of the person she expected him to be. (How did you get this number, did you steal this phone, you're a thief, stuff like that) Then we realised she tried to reach someone with his phone-number upside down. She just dialed the number from a small piece of paper, without anything written with it.

I never knew the area code of our phone number when I was a child, just the seven digits.
Naturally, we had just one phone in the house, a rotary-dial phone attached to a wall in the kitchen.  :)

The one on our kitchen wall was bright red, with a super long cord.

We had one in just about every room of the house though, once my dad started running phone line there was no stopping him. I was the same way when we had a landline in our old house, I had two jacks in each room in case I wanted to re-arrange things.

Wouldn't answer it half of the time...and the only person I ever called was my mother.  :autism:

12175 was the telephone number to my grandfather. It was actually 175 when he got it since he was the 175th person to get a telephone back in the day, but the numbering system was extended later.

175   It sure was a simpler time :2thumbsup:

You only called someone if you had to, and if that someone had enough money to afford a telephone. ;D

If somebody was going to call you, like a doctor for example, you waited at home all day!

On the other hand, you didn't run around with your phone, bumping into things and looking silly.

I do worry about the people I see meandering down sidewalks in the rougher neighborhoods,
never looking up from their phones.  One must always be alert when walking downtown.  :tinfoil:

47 ... the approximate number of years of my life I've been meekly cowering in the presence of
aggression from stronger personalities, beginning with my mother's.  That's a lot of cowering.  :hide: :P
