This is an actual radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995.
Radio conversation released by the chief of naval operations, 10-10-95.
CANADIANS: Please divert your course 15 degrees south to avoid a collision.
AMERICANS: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.
CANADIANS: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees south to avoid a collision.
AMERICANS: This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
CANADIANS: No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.
AMERICANS: This is the Aircraft carrier US LINCOLN, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic Fleet. We are accompinied with three Destroyers, three Cruisers and numerous support vessels. I DEMAND that you change your course 15 degrees north. I say again, that's one-five degrees north, or counter-measures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
CANADIANS: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

That Canuck sounds like a smartarse. He had two chances to tell the Yank he was communicating from a lighthouse.

I've got Asperger's Syndrome. What can I say?
The transcript Eamonn posted is apparently from an actual radio conversation. Now it has most likely spread successfully over the internet because of its use in illustrating American arrogance and stupidity. Would people view it differently if the roles of the American and the Canadian were reversed?
I did find the transcript quite amusing. And then my pedantry got the better of me.
I'm just surprised that in a real-time situation such as a naval radio conversation, a person wouldn't take the first opportunity to let the other person know why they couldn't divert their "course".
And I do have a sense of humour by the way. Don't you remember my joke about Einstein's dick?? ;D

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! (Isaiah 14:12)
-
i'll see you Isiah, and raise you milton:
?? Lucifer from Heaven
(So call him, brighter once amidst the host
Of Angels than that star the stars among) ??
John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book VII.
or even:
? 'Dark?n?d so, yet shon
Above them all th? Arch Angel: but his face
Deep scars of Thunder had intrencht, and care
Sat on his faded cheek, but under Browes
Of dauntless courage, and considerate Pride ?
?cruel his eye, but cast
Signs of remorse and passion to behold
The fellows of his crime?' (Book I).
He moved gracefully towards Jerome, like a panther, but almost impossibly fast. Jerome closed his eyes. He felt hands on his shoulders, and then a mouth lowered to his ear. ?Milton got it wrong. Do I look faded?? His breath was hot on Jerome?s shoulder, tasted of spices and slow nights. Jerome opened his eyes, as the angel pulled away from him. No, he didn?t look faded. Not at all. Lucifer looked into his eyes, and on, through, into his soul."
(The Morality of Angels)

I'll raise you Max Romeo:
"Lucifer son of the morning, I?m gonna chase you out of earth!
I?m gonna put on a iron shirt, and chase Satan out of earth.
I?m gonna send him to outta space, to find another race."

Jah be praised.
And I apologise for steering this thread off-topic.? :police:

so THAT'S where that Prodigy sample came from!
*blows whistle and rubs vaporub on his gas mask*

Duncvis, maybe you can help me with this one.
Have you heard the Prodigy track, Breathe?
There's a gothic-sounding guitar riff in the middle of it.
It sounds like it's either Joy Division or The Cure.
-
which bit in particular? gimme the time (such a scientist!), cos i can think of several different bits you might mean.
luuuurve that song... 8)

1 min 30. The bit where the breakbeats stop for a few seconds.
I downloaded the track yesterday. I was surprised at how little I enjoyed it.?
But then, I've almost completely lost interest in that sort of decadent crap lately.? ;D
Aren't you a bit old to be listening to The Prodigy?? ?:P
-
Sounds more like a New Order riff to me.
-
Aren't you a bit old to be listening to The Prodigy? :P
probably.
aren't you a bit young to be trying to keep up with the grown-ups, then?
:P:P
and, just for that, you can work it out fer yerself, yer git.
(i'll have a listen later, but if dunc doesn't know, i'm unlikely to, to be honest).
