Title: Dreams: Why do people think they turn into all-knowing sages at night?
Post by: ZEGH8578 on October 21, 2009, 04:42:41 PM
im sick of constantly suggesting to people that dreams are VERY unlikely to be windows into the future, or that they have some deeper meaning beyond us all.

they come from our dumb juicy brains, theyre just images.

i shouldnt be surprised tho. people still believe in... well.. you know what people believe in. economies and drama-shows and magical deities

let me be the one to state VERY clearly:
MY dreams mean Jack Shit.

Especially cus tonight i dreamt my balls turned dry and waxy, and fell apart :(

I have to disagree. I problem solve in my sleep but I have lucid dreams and that's a different type of dreaming. Things that are bothering me throughout the day I process at night and gain clarity for the morning.

My dreams are usually fucked up.  Like the time I dreamt I killed a goat.

I agree, but I think that's different than what Z is saying. I think he is talking about people who think dreams tell the future or believe there is some kind of mystic power attached to them.

you killed a goat, my balls turned to wax bisquits and my brother dreamt my mother grew beards out her ass

seriously

theres nothing phophetic about them

what they DO however, is they visualize whats on your mind lately.
if your clever you can explore your subconcious, and analyze it, to learn more about yourself. that IS true

You seem to fit in well

Most dreams are shit sometimes I get ideas on projects in them but never and future type stuff.
My wife on the other hand believes in this so I have to be careful what I say around her.   Just to put in perspective I and the logical science type she is far from it as an art teaher

Dreams are the brain's way of performing a core dump.

true!

Parts: ahah, yes, and yes i like your attitude, too many would make it their mission to impose around. i impose opinions too, but always assess, always. some ideas you let people keep in peace :]
religions are usually the last i mess with, if talking to someone religious, unless they Are Allready doubting it, and are seeing faults in it

Every time my wife is pregnant, near the end she dreams she has given birth, only to wake up and still be pregnant. Pisses her off  :green:

every time? :D

ive often dreamt about big shoplifting. but i never get out of the store. i delay and delay always trying to find some item that i simply MUST steal out, there will be some pastry, or ill remember some other food, or sometimes a comic book i just GOTTA find, and i stay and stay and stay in the store, untill i wake up.
annoying

comics also come back, i used to collect elfquest when i was little, and in dreams ill find completely unreleased, old and original stories "OMFG How did i Miss these!?!?!?" and not be able to afford them, there will usually be like a whole bunch of issues ive missed. i browse through them and they look amazing :(

one time i found a fantastically illustrated dinosaur book too, right down my alley, full of skeletal diagrams, and detailed studies, cheap in some local store, even the magazine rack at some gas station. and i have no money
WHYYYYYYYY"!!

All-knowing sages at night, I can deal with that a lot better than all-knowing sages during the day, for whom every coincidence is a clear sign of something.

Somehow it does piss them off when I say it is a very meaningful coincidence that grass is green in more than one garden.

Oh, WTH.

And yes, I do think there is some lucidity. But seeing everything as a sign of a higher meaning or intent is just a bit overdone for me. (trying to implement understatement)

I dream I do horrible things to people I dislike. I think it makes me a better person in my waking hours.
(I also dream of doing really nice things to people I really like - benefits during my waking hours is somewhat uncertain)

I've never had a dream where I hurt someone. I've had dreams where I die, or someone I love dies, but never as a result of violence. I tend to dream about the things that make me happy. Road trips, travel and sex. Wow. I need to broaden my dreaming horizons a bit, eh?

I dreamt my baby was with me in bed night and night again when my first was just born. So if her dad wanted to get into the bed, I'd wake, panicking telling him there was a little girl in bed. And I'd be searching her frantically. He'd then go and check her bed, tell she was asleep and safe there, and I would let him step into bed.

 :eyebrows:

I have dreamt of physically raging, about drowning, heights. The dreams of raging did me good, made me more effectively angry when awake. Never got what the heights and drowning brought me. Didn't make me swim better, nor did I learn to fly.

And uhm, I dream of this Australian man lately. Really nice dreams I have to say.

Sometimes I will get a good dream about Stargate or something. Most of the time it is trivial stuff like not getting to class on time, missing an exam, looking for something and not being able to find it....stuff like that. Lately I have been dreaming and halfway through it I get stomach cramps within the dream. It has happened a lot of times and I wonder if I am really having cramps outside the dream.

Last night I woke GA up by asking him why he was sitting up. He was asleep, not sitting up. I have half-awake dreams. I also get sleep paralysis and that is horrible.

My dreams are usually really weird or extremely fucked up. One such fucked up dream was about having a job putting women and children onto cubes with no windows, heating them up slowly to about 2000C and hear the screams. They have no safe place as all sides of the cube are bloody hot. I was then put into one, could actually feel the pain for a bit until I woke up. :aff:

Sometimes I dream that I'm burning, and then wake up and find that I've overheated while in bed and become uncomfortably hot and dehydrated.

haha

its always pretty when your mind gives you dream-torment like that

i was shot in the head in one dream, i felt the dead blood ooze ouy my mouth, my eyeballs stopped moving, it was impressively "realistic" according to what ive gathered about what happens to people shot in the head. probably based on that info. damn me and my info seeking!

in another dream i was movie-style killed by a monster inside the walls on a boat. i even appreciated it! "hey! i get to be the random monster-kill!"

damn tonight i had my first "insane serial killer" dream, in a total american high school slasher setting, some richmans place w a pool and stuff, and i kept sneaking around in there in the night hiding and stuff, lots of mind-games, really intense bad-vibe dream, untill i decided to "control" the dream, haha the illusion, BUT

it turns into my 3rd ever flying dream, and i fly over the night city, its - as my other fly dreams "realistic" in that i must always focus, focus focus on keeping myself elevated, or i start to dive. i skip from some roofs too, wondering wether i escaped the dream about the serial killer or wether i just escaped the killer himself (see, thats how much control i had :D )
