PMS Elle figured out a way to reset the karma of an individual member to zero and keep it there.
If you would like to opt out of the karma system and you want to have permanent zero karma, please PM an administrator and we will make the necessary modifications to your account. Unfortunately, these modifications work only for zero karma, so we cannot freeze your karma at any other number.
-
Anyone getting angsty over some trivial system needs to get their head examined. Seriously.
-
Your certainly right. And I'm living proof! Oh well, starting Friday we'll be on a vacation, see how I feel when I get back!

Sorry, Ozy. You're one of the good guys here, and I apologise if my statement offended you so.
-
No you didn't offend me, in fact I agree with you. It's just that last night I asked Callaway to do just that and after my rants about how I didn't care about the karma system in the past, it sort of made me look hypocritical! In retrospect!
Thanks BTW.
-
it has been put to a vote, twice, and voted in, twice.
now we have discovered a backdoor to care for the individuals choice.
not too shabby.
-
Yay for PMS Elle for being a smartarse..... :plus: her, unless you disapprove of this karma nonsense.

that's pretty funny stuff. :plus:
-
Well, now we have another choice. Don't like it....we have the PMS Elle system (or insert another name for it). Like it......don't change it!
-
Re-set mine please.. keep it at 0. Someone here has it in for me, it went from 117 to 101 in a couple of days when I had never even posted ::) Grow up, people.

Done. Maybe someone is jealous of you?

Well this sucks. How am I supposed to make everyone even now?

That's funny, because I tried to both Yay and Ghey you and it had no effect whatsoever. ???

Yes. :-[

Guess you just have to aim for 0's. Might actually be easier. You sound like someone I
want to play cards with.

Probably someone with access to the karma function giving me a little tweak! ::)

Cheers guys (and girls) for the re-set.

You didn't add me as your MySpace friend, and I got angry. Hence your recent karma drop.
And I was lying 'bout that. Tee-hee!

Thanks, I never thought of that! You might want to reconsider your last comment. I never lose at cards.

Nah, it didn't start dropping until after you showed.
Sort of hit an equilibrium.

Whose buttons do you like pushing Calandale, and how hard do you like to push them?

Thanks. I had to learn not to tell McJ that I yay him, for something
similar.
Not quite what I meant.
I was referring to physical
ones.
But, pretty much anyone's,
when I'm in the mood.
Though only with a feather's
touch, barely perceptible, unless
I'm pissed.

Your button pushing habit makes you sound suited for a career as an accupuncturist.
As for McJ, i think he likes to call it whoring (the karma thing)...

Rather be put in a position of authority at NORAD,
to tell the truth.

Yeah. His side of it.
Kinda disgusts me,
but whatever.

lol, i hope your button pushing habit doesnt make it to Norad.
As for McJ, he doesnt particually disgust me, should I be disgusted by him?

I don't know.
I'd rather you find that
out for yourself.
Only the karma whoring is
disgusting to me. But, he
LIKES numbers a lot.

No, no, i love numbers in a totally different way to McJ, put it like this i can apply them for what they are for rather than numerology...

applied math.
Sorry for saying that.

Well really I am both a pure and applied at the minute, I havent decided which way i am going to specialise yet, ive got an offer that lets me pick and choose a mix of science and maths modules, as well as chuck some things in from arts. What subject did you do at college/uni?

Just finished up an MS in computer science.
Didn't manage to impress anyone enough
to get into the PhD program (well - turned
down the one person, but it wouldn't
have worked).
Had strongly considered trying for the doctorate
in Mathematics though.

Cool, I am probably going to do quite a bit of Computer Science modules. What did you make of CompSci. How can you do a doctorate in mathematics straight from a computer science degree, i thought computer science only covered the discrete aspects of maths?

I have some math background,
and departments are willing to
help someone get up to speed.
Oddly, probably the thing that I
MOST need is linear algebra (odd
because many CS students pick this
up just for the graphics usage).
Things like real analysis are pretty much
required, for upper level computer science,
(as is graph theory, though essentially discrete),
and there is a strong emphasis here on both
abstract algebra and formal logic. Hell, I nearly
to category theory.

The thing with the linear you learn in computer science, if its for transformations, is that you only go up to 3x3 matrices. Linear algebra is quite easy to do though, if you have a reasonable textbook you could teach yourself.
What other bits are you missing asides your linear?

I'm actually not too badly off on it,
as I was helping write a textbook
on it (sort of the uninformed editor of such),
but could use the refresher class.
As to the rest, I don't have the total credits,
but probably have enough of the expected
background. The undergrad where I went last,
had tremendous overlap between the two degrees.
I think that I was 4 or so classes away from being
able to get a dual major. So, it wouldn't be too
big a deal. But, I'd have to re-do the classes for
an MS, essentially. As there was no overlap there.
So, it would mean starting over.

Do you want a Phd so badly though... Is it an excuse to avoid getting a job for you?
-
bloody hell, y'all won't stay gheyed!

Nah there been others with higher negative karma.
-
Do you want a Phd so badly though... Is it an excuse to avoid getting a job for you?
But of course.
Eh, I don't know if I want one all that much.
I just rather like the school atmosphere.
And I THOUGHT that I'd be able to fall
in love with research - but I kinda think not.
I'll probably just wind up a bum again.

Well as long as you publish a paper now and then, you can pretty much be a bum after you get your PhD. Personally if I go for one myself i would like to have finished it in my mid twenties.

Not if you want a decent position.
You really do have to keep working
away pretty hard, for a while.

no chance. not with the changes in the HE system. it did used to be like that, but not any more.

In the UK you are right, but if you move abroad you can still get permanent tenure. Plus they pay you more elsewhere, in the UK everything is chronically underfunded, which translates in to academics having to do more work. If you overspecialise, you can still get tenure for a few things here I think.
-
There should be tenure for lecturers and teachers, otherwise you get people who aren't committed to their jobs.
