Who should be able to get married and who shouldn't?
IMO any consenting adults should be able to enter into a civil marriage.
Religious marriages should be for the church etc themselves to decide.
To receive any financial or legal benefits for your marriage, you must enter into a civil marriage, whether or not you have a religious marriage.

opinions? :2thumbsup:

I think anyone should be allowed to get married. Personally though. I would never want to get married to anyone. I don't see the need.

more stuff in the news about gay marriage and straight civil partnerships
It should just be civil marriage recognised by the state, for male/female/gay/straight/whatever
I still don't get why so many people make such a big deal out of this :facepalm2:

We have that, and civil partner-registration, for those who do not want a marriage.
There can be ritual or religious ceremonies later, if people want, but, the legal binding thing is a state thing.
Living together and arranging things at a notary public is also an option, but it does not give the same duties and rights as marriage and partner-registration can do.
-
that sounds better than here
I just think it's really stupid how it is separate.
-
It's funny, first partner-registration was created, to give legal rights to gay couples. Then a lot of not gay couples went for partner-registration too. Then marriage opened up for same sex relationships. And now we have both marriage and parter-registration, for all. And there is not much difference between the two.
And there is the option of making legal arrangements via a notary public. Less binding, and giving less rights too.
Lots of choices here, for all.
-
That's happening a bit here too - straight couples wanting civil partnerships. Not a lot, but a bit. I think it's a good thing
-
Yes, the whole differentiating should stop.
Do they use adoption reasons to keep marriage a mixed couple thing only in the UK too?
-
I'm not sure actually. I think they mainly just use the whole "tradition/definition of marriage" bollocks
-
That's what we had first, and then, there was this thing about changing rights for same sex married couples when it comes to adoption, because it could endanger the chances of mixed couples to adopt from some countries abroad. Very weird.
As far as I am aware, the rights are completely the same, also when it comes to the right to adopt.
-
I really don't care who can get married or why people have such a fit about gay marriage
-
is anyone here against gay marriage? I want to discuss it with someone
-
I am. Gay marriage sickens me. All those dirty queers should be shot :hitler:

You want to discuss it with someone who is against it?
Have nothing against it, and don't think anyone has ever made a good arguement against it either.
-
Me neither. On mosts sites there are usually plenty of people against it though

Interesting question. One poster said:
Trying to legitimise bigoted view by hiding behind the supposed morality of christian beliefs is all that is going on here.
How would they feel if my religion suggested that black people were somehow inferior to white? Would that be OK, could I legitimately say "I'm not a bigot, I just have strong religious views"?
They are bigoted people who should not have the right to brainwash a child with their hatred.

They make a valid point and its tempting to simply agree with that POV.
But then there really are passages in the Bible that condemn homosexuality, sad to say. Supposing that you believe that Bible really is the literal Word Of God, then you're not gonna be comfortable about ignoring those passages. You;re gonna have a lot of problems, in fact (like how to account for the contradicyions?) but that's gonna be one of them.
I've no reason to think that they are not just sincere people, and no more bigotted than the Jehovah's witness who believes that it's wrong to have a blood transfusion, and will die for that belief, if necessary. It's a stupid belief, but to put it down to hatred...well, that's a bigoted assumption if ever there was one.
Yep, it could be really hard on a homosexual child that they happened to adopt. But, heck, nobody's a perfect parent, and if we first picked apart their beliefs, then we wouldn't allow anybody on earth to have kids.

I think that's very interesting and I think that Mr. and Mrs. Johns should be allowed to continue being foster parents.
I think there is a vast need for good foster parents, as they have already demonstrated themselves to be, and I don't believe that it's necessary for foster parents to share all their foster children's values.
As the article said:
‘Mr and Mrs Johns do value diversity – they will take any child.
‘Valuing diversity does not mean that you cannot have a disagreement or do not respect a person while not valuing certain lifestyles. The court must be mindful that these public policy objectives are not used to trump fundamental rights.’
-
What if their religious beliefs dictated that they could not teach a child that women were equal to men?
-

Fraid not. I might seem all alpha male, but I have a really open mind when it comes to stuff like this.

That's exactly how I feel about it. Marriage these days is merely signing a contract anyway, with divorce being the negotiations of terminating the contract. I don't see the 'magic' in such marriage ceremonies, when the divorce is a session in a unpleasant courtroom.
-
Thats because there is no magic. ;)
-
Thats because there is no magic. ;)
Heh yeah, but the entertainment industry loves to delude people with 'fairy-tale weddings' and 'romances' though.
-
Yeah thats just for show. Correct.
Marriage is work, lots of it. And most of the time it doesn't last.
-

If tinkerbell says there's no magic then it must be true :( *CG's hopes and dreams were just crushed*
-

Marriage is work, lots of it. And most of the time it doesn't last.
And I think THAT is what so many people don't realize. Anything you want to last you have to work at it. My parents have been together for 44 years, and married for 39 years and I've seen how hard they've worked at it. But because of that work, they're still very much in love with each other. Although sometimes my Dad says they're just in like. Depends on the day.
-
Indeed. Don't get the impression i'm wise or sagely or anything though. I'm only as wise as the people i'm around at the time. ;)
-
A lot of people get married too quickly, before they even know each other properly.
-
Yeah. They just get horny, and the thought of being able to fuck someone every night gets them exited.
Its really not that simple, living with someone. Even on the short term. I've tried it.
-
What was the longest you've lived with someone?
-
Around six months, give or take a month. I'm kind of a dickhead when it comes to cleanliness, and I wind up yelling when my things are out of place. That probably didn't help much.
-
A lot of people get married too quickly, before they even know each other properly.
I knew my ex 14 years before I married him. I just can't win.
-
Actually I just remembered a dealbreaker. Once I came home and she was just chilling out like she'd watched tv all day, and the apartment was covered in wrappers from food, her clothes, general "draggins" I call it. I flew off the handle and said some real mean stuff like about leaving her "sticky fucking panties" all over the floor, and "How hard is it to move your hand a couple of goddamn inches and drop the clothes in the fucking hamper?"
I went on for about an hour and she left, crying. I didn't call her. :P
-
You asshole
It also depends on how well the couple is matched, too. I only lived with TOW for two months when I visited but we went through enough shit, to make it seem as if we've lived together for at least a year :P
I like living together, it's nice. Both of us are not keen on marriage either, so that's good.
-
I don't care who you marry, as long as you don't viloate the Buggery Act of 1533 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buggery_Act_1533). :police: :P

He was one of my closest friends. I practically lived at his Mum's house because his sister was my best friend and I was good friends with his other brother. He had to chase me pretty hard though because I was anti-relationship at the time. He was a good guy. The one everybody turned to if they needed something because you knew he'd always be there. But looking back I should have left the moment he pinned me to the wall and said I wasn't go anywhere until he said I could. I saw his Dad in him at that point. He was treating me just like his Dad treated his Mum. But knowing him and his family as well as I did I thought we could overcome it and work through it.
Things were good for awhile and then when his company took off and he started making serious money, that's when things really changed. He loved his image and the perks that came with it. I stayed the same small town girl that I was before we got married and I didn't want the 10,000 sq ft house that he wanted to build. And if I needed him he wasn't there. Ever. Work always came first and I was just another employee who was given a bi-monthly paycheck.

that's the glossed over version. The details I won't put out there, but suffice to say, I need to get myself into a few years of therapy to get through the damage he's done, both to me and the kids.

I was hoping to get into an argument with a conservative christian in this thread. do we not have any of those around here? :(

Yeah all you damn liberals!! :hitler:

At least he was ambitous and had a decent job.
My sister's first husband got caught embezzling money from his first job. He had to work cash under the table after that. Even then, he spent half his pay up his nose.
Her second husband, she met in the aftermath of the '94 Northridge earthquake. He was 38 and living with his mom, and didn't have a job. My sister figured that this would be someone good to have 3 kids with. ::)

I'm usually meek, but I don't think I'd last through five minutes of such a tirade without becoming vicious! I'm getting really angry in my middle age.
My cousin says she sees a pattern of ill-temper in the females (herself included) in a particular branch of our family. :flame:
On the other hand, good for you for having that kind of lung power despite being a smoker! :chin:

I think anyone that really wants to get married should have the opportunity to do so, why anyone would really "want to" though kind of escapes me. :zombiefuck:

Marriage just seems stupid. Why do I need a contract to prove I love someone? Why is it anyone's business who I declare my love to?
