Title: My feral kitten
Post by: bodie on June 11, 2013, 06:16:12 PM
A neighbor of my friend, Austin, has some feral cats living under a JCB tyre in his back garden.  He is clearing the area and the cats must go.  His skip arrived today and everything in his yard is going in it.

He said that the only ones left was a mother and about three or four kittens.  I was concerned about them so i went round with the intention of taking them to the animal sanctuary.  (they guy who lives there couldn't give a toss and just wants them gone)

I sat near to the JCB tyre and opened a pouch of cat food.  Mum and two kittens came out.  I rescued just one of the kittens.  I think there must be just two kittens as i couldn't see the others.

Anyway, i will have to return tomorrow to try and get the mom and the other kitten.

Meanwhile -  I  fell in love with the one i got.  I don't know if it's a boy or girl,  i did not want to stress it out.  I also didn't take a photo yet.  I will try and get one tomorrow.

He is a big ball of grey fluff.  I luuurve him.  I guess he must be six or seven weeks old.  I want to keep him.

Any advice?

Ugh, I couldn't give up a kitten. I can't even walk through petsmart because I want them all. I'd make a stellar crazy cat lady.

If you're thinking about keeping it just get it to a vet ASAP before you have it around any pets you have in your house already.

Keep it if you can, find a home for it if you can't.

I'm just joking. keep it if you must, but know a kitten is more responsibility than a child. :blonde:

We have a feral family in the back yard. We approach them slowly by putting the food out in the same place every day and going inside, then standing outside near it, then tossing bits of meat, then getting them to take it from our hands. I don't know a good way to get them in just a day. Maybe lay the food down outside the tire and step back so that when they come out, you can get between them and the tire, then be ready to grab the kitten first because it's less likely to survive if the yard is torn up than the mother.

Later you can acclimatize them to touch by stroking their scruff while they're eating, they'll mistake it for their mother licking them if they don't see your hand.

I'd say a covered box with a towel and one opening so it will feel safe.  Make sure it has fast access to it.  Place food and water near-by.  As much peace and quiet as you can give Sooty for as long as you can.  Ditto on the vet visit.  Probably has fleas and worms.

Remember in the wild, danger comes from above, so try as much as possible to get down to it's level so it's not threatened.

Get him or her checked out...you may want to keep them secluded to one room or area for now, they will probably want to hide if they aren't very socialized and they can get stuck or hide sometimes in the tiniest and worst possible places.

Canned food, cat sip (cat milk) will bring them out of hiding and help with the initial bonding. Watch out, even a wee one can give you a nasty bite when they're scared.

If you decide to keep him or her, make sure to get them fixed promptly, if not a male will start spraying and a un-altered female can spray as well, not to mention how often they can come in heat.  :zombiefuck:

My fur babies are indoor only because of location, other ferals, and predators (dogs, and wild coyote).

I have one cranky female that knocks stuff off of shelves, talks back if you tell her "no", does sneak attacks, and bitch slaps the other for no reason other than he exists...and then in the next moment she can be the sweetest thing you've ever seen showering you with love.

The male is easy-going and laid back and thinks he's a dog, he wags his tail and will lick you all over. He cries like a baby if I'm outside too long and he always seems to know when I'm upset or not feeling well.

Don't know what I'd do without them some days.

.

Yeah, the mom has to lick their asshole and dick/pussy, or they can't piss or shit. It builds up and ruptures their insides.

Bodie, it looks adorable. And, you can already snuggle it, so, it's not too feral. You'll have it socialised soon I think.

Would you like to have your cat coming inside the house too? In that case, having it in a bench with litter box, food and a warm place to sleep could be a good place for the kitten to slowly get used to the dogs, and getting used to the Urchin.
Hug it a lot, stroke it's fur a lot, groom it, make it feel safe and happy with you and the Urchin.
A vet has liquid neck drops against fleas and worms that can be used on kittens too, not every brand is good for the wee ones.

If you could get the mum to start a feral life on your property, you could have your rat catcher. Feral cats often are well trained in killing.

I think the mama cat puts gentle pressure on the kitten's bladder when it licks to stimulate urination.  Kittens don't usually poop until much older and they are weaned.

Aw, cute kitten.   You shouldn't have problem socializing a cat that young.

How about Barnacle?  Kinda goes with Urchin.

I thought my cat was pregnant a while back.  Her belly grew very quickly during the first few weeks after we adopted her.  Turned out she was just chubbin' out.

Yes, pretty much. Most young Swedes like foreign food. Traditional Swedish food doesn't taste very much.

Kitty is nice. I will hug him and play with him and feed him lots of raw meat because dried food is bad for his kidneys. PS did you know that there are some insane idiots who try to feed their pets a vegetarian diet? A cat is an obligate carnivore and will die after a prolonged meatless diet. Just because a person makes a bizarre ideological choice doesn't mean an innocent animal should suffer.

True.

Just like some bizarre breeders made such choices breeding their dogs, that some breeds thrive better on a vegetarian diet than on a diet with meat. Breeding can do weird things. Dogs are of course no obligate carnivores, but still.

Back to the kitty. How is he adapting to his fellow housemates?

Yes! It's Fester's doppleganger  :zoinks:

He is settling in fine!  The dogs haven't met him.  They have their own housing so it is not something i will be trying out for a while.  I have much experience with dogs but i am just a trainee at cat ownership so i am on dodgy ground.

I am reading up on the pro's and con's of neutering.  Being from a dog show world it is a foreign concept.  Although i can see why it is recommended.

He loves the urchin, especially when he sits on the sofa with his feet hanging over the edge and his toes wriggling  :zoinks:

They should be bombarded with ALF propaganda to the point of their conscience never allowing them to own a pet again.

I'm not a cat/dog relationship expert, but I wouldn't put it off too long.  Maybe rub the dogs down with a towel and let Fester smell it (maybe leave it on the floor for him to explore).  See how he reacts.  Ditto for the dogs learning Fester's scent.

I imagine cats are put off by dog barking, but having the dogs at the back of your yard will probably desensitize him to the sound somewhat.

Cats are easier than dogs IMO.  They're just different.

If you have something he can climb and perch on like one of those tower carpeted structures he will be very happy.  Don't buy one in a brick-and-mortar store, they're a lot cheaper online.  A bird feeder in the window will entertain him for hours.  You don't need expensive toys.  My cat prefers my ponytail ties over any of her other toys.

Catnip is HILARIOUS.

Some cats need more than one litter pan or they go all over the floor.  If he's having accidents try moving the pan or getting a second one.  My cat wouldn't go in the basement so I moved her pan upstairs.  She didn't have any accidents after that.  Spoiled brat cat!  :P

They barf a lot.  It doesn't necessarily mean they're sick, just gluttonous.

You can train him to use the toilet if you want.  It is kind of a pain and it doesn't always work, though.

Glad it is going well.  :)

Kittens often do not react on catnip. When they get older, most cats will though. If catnip isn't their drug, valerian probably will be.

Great to use if you want to learn your cat only to scratch on appropriate places, and just fun to see a cat play with something smelling of catnip.

:orly: Didn't know that about kittens and catnip.  I haven't had a kitten since I was five.  Never tried valerian.

I'd love to get another cat but I think my little Amy would kill me in my sleep if I did.  She's a bit of an attention whore.  If she can't find me she goes around the house yowling, and I swear it sounds like she's saying, "Mom! Mom! MAAAAAAWM!!!"

Get her a cat who really, really loves to cuddle, and who likes kids. She may go attention whoring the cat then, and give you a bit more time on your hands. (That is, if she is beyond the stage of not knowing how to treat a cat right.)

I'm not sure.  She had kittens a few months before we adopted her.  I think that was last fall.  Before that she was in a shelter with other cats.

The kids want a dog, but I don't know.  They didn't really care for our last dog.

Fester is very good at going in his litter tray.

He is coming on a treat.  Instances of him hiding and running away when you get close to him are fewer and fewer.  Last night i was lying on the sofa and he curled up in the little space behind where my knees were.

He is very adorable and it is so lovely to see him get some confidence.

He has a catnip toy but doesn't bother with it that much.  He loves his wind up white mouse.  He loves playing with a kiddies fake plastic golf ball in my drawer.

I loves him.

when our cats were kittens every time they got a treat I did a distinctive whistle sound.  When they were older and outside they would come when I whistled.  Sure beat yelling and being ignored.
