Title: Odd or Unusual words you like, but rarely get a chance to use.
Post by: DirtDawg on January 17, 2007, 12:18:58 AM
... or even a phrase if you want.

One of my favorite words that I wish I could use more is circumlocution or if I can "invent" a verb: circumlocute, which we do here, frequently.

There are so many ... here are a few I can think of right now.

Lascivious ... I just like to say this word. It feels good to say it.

Repugnant ... I just can't think of many words that make the sound of their meaning as well, once you get past "pop".

Steatopygia ... When you find this in the dictionary, you never forget it, because it could come in handy some day.

Facetious ... it just feels good.

Meniscus ... Another word I kept for fun of being one of very few who would use it.

Meniscus - Yes I like this one too. I once used it at work and got surprised looks.    ???

Fuzz - It feels nice to say.

Tilde - I also like how it looks! ~~~~~~~  ;D

Pulchritudinous - It sounds like it means something else.

Recalcitrant - I just love to say it ...

I think that was the first word my boyfriend taught me.  He's very polysyllabic but I'm moderately polysyllabic so he didn't initially stump me on words until he used that one, though he's done it many times since.  I hate the syntax of that last sentence.

I like the word "syntax" though.

Other words I like:

Neologism (I like making them too)
Perseverate
Craptacular

I'll post more later.

Fun words and terms from some of my interests:

Thermionic - valve amplification

Hysteresis - magnetics

Gaussian - magnetics

Reverberation constant - Acoustics problem solving term, along with reverberation times (say it fast a bunch of times)

Acoustician - One who does acoustic preparations prior to a recording session (one of my specialties was determining and correcting the causes of sonic colorations)

Circles of confusion - limits maximum resolution in any photographic reproduction process

Ballistic coefficient - Aerodynamics of a bullet (super-simplified) How well a bullet will cut through the air.

Sectional Density - A direct indication of the penetrating power of a bullet (mass/diameter2 of a projectile)

Angle of incidence - photography - lighting angles - Measured from a plane perpendicular to the axis of  the receiving lens

Asplenium - Botany - Genus of ferns (Ferns are a special interest, inside a special interest)

Monocotyledons - Botany - Single flower leaf ( another word that sounds like your tongue is doing tai chi exercises)

Epiphytic - Horticulture - plant that grows on other plants, but not parasitic

Lithophytic - Horticulture - plant that grows on rocks

Angiosperm - Botany - flowering plant (try telling a receptionist that she has a number of angiosperms on her desk)

Zygomorphic - Botany - bi-laterally symmetrical (it's just hard to find a conversaton to drop this word into)

Phalaenopsis - Botany - Genus of orchids (want to talk about orchids, anyone?)

Thermionic, thermionic, thermionic!

I know this word is not uncommon.  And also, I am somewhat pissed off it became 7 of 9's catch phrase, because she was such an over played character, and she often used it incorrectly.  But I am a big fan of irrelevant.

That is how I describe myself. ^_^

Some invented terms to honor certain well conglomerated misfactions:

Cryptoclastic Density Currency - how payments are made when you have chosen to NOT understand.

Fully Dilute Cryptoclastic Density - a tendency to stand in the flow of cryptoclasms of hot gas while fishing.

Cryptochasm - a deep crevasse, especially one deliberately made wider, in the surface of a communication attempt.

Fucking awesome word I heard on "House,"  last night. I have only seen the program twice before, but I was trying to sleep and hoping for some help from the numbtube, when I found "House."

It is an interesting show. If it was available on DVD, I might buy it.

I'll have to look closer, I suppose. I buy quite a few movies, but television programming does not usually appeal to me, unless it's Sci-Fi.

I can't tolerate many commercials or low-res, so I would need to buy it on disk.

Nonchalant
Title: Re: Odd or Unusual words you like, but rarely get a chance to use.

Nonchalant

You made me wonder if there is a chalant.  So............

Is “chalant” the opposite of “nonchalant”?

Q: I hear “nonchalant” used all the time to mean unconcerned, but I never hear “chalant” used to mean concerned. Is there such a word in English?

A: No, there’s no “chalant,” just “nonchalant.” Only the negative form of the word has found a home in English.

As the Oxford English Dictionary explains, “nonchalant” was borrowed from French sometime before 1734.

It’s defined as meaning “calm and casual; (deliberately) lacking in enthusiasm or interest; indifferent, unconcerned.”

In French, nonchalant is the present participle of the verb nonchaloir (the earlier form was nonchaler), meaning to neglect or despise.

Its roots are the negative prefix non and the verb chaloir (earlier chaler), meaning to interest or to be important.

Those French verbs came from the classical Latin verb calere, which the OED defines as “to be warm, to be roused with zeal or anger, to be active.”

But though we don’t have “chalant,” we once had an adjective derived from that Latin verb: “calent.”

It’s no longer used, but back in the 1600s and 1700s it meant  warm or hot.

We’ve written before on the blog about words like “disgruntled” and “inscrutable” that seem to have only negative forms.

The third edition of Pat’s grammar and usage book Woe Is I includes a section about words like these. We’ll quote the passage:

“Some words are sourpusses. They’re negative through and through, and have no positive counterparts. I’m thinking of words like unkempt, inept, disgruntled, and uncouth. We might joke about looking ‘kempt’ or being ‘couth,’ but in fact the negatives have no opposite forms—they’re either obsolete rarities or whimsical inventions.

“Other negatives with nonexistent or obscure opposite numbers include debunk, disappointing, disconcerting, disconsolate, disheveled, dismayed, immaculate, impeccable, inadvertent, incapacitated, inclement, incognito, incommunicado, incorrigible, indefatigable, inevitable, indomitable, insipid, misnomer, mistake, nonchalant, noncommittal, nondescript, nonpareil, nonplussed, unassuming, unbeknownst, ungainly, and unwieldy.

“Some similar words without opposite versions may look like negatives, but they aren’t. Their negative-looking prefixes (im and in) emphasize or intensify instead. Actually, intensify and instead are among these words, and so are insure, impromptu, inscribe, and inflammable.”

Apparently, a word for keychain. It was used in the computer game Fallout, and both there, and elsewhere, it is erroneously acronymized as "FOB", although it is a proper word: Fob.

Azerbaijan.

Not so much a word as a name...but it is my favourite word. Also:

I agree. Well, not my favorite but definitely one of my favorite country names. It has real rythm to it - Azerbaijan!

Last years(or before that, I lose track) Eurovision was held in Azerbaijan, in case you're non-european and don't know. If you're European, you allready knew, and couldn't give less of a rats ass :D

I also like Congo. It has a firm, stirdy negroness to it. Congo!

Edit: Don't hurry to find out what Eurovision is, it is difficult to explain - it is NOT a "talent competition", but it is a competition where each European country (and some outside) represent with an artist - this may be ANY artist, it may be a newcomer, or an established singer. The whole point is just tradition and singing, not so much to really break down talent or anything. the competition only has one "round", and doesn't continue as a series.
The winning country hosts the next show. It has run since after WW2, and was probably implemented to make Europeans buddies again :D
The show is a typical love-to-hate subject in Europe, and is also known for being ADORED by the gay population.

It's the easiest way to get the money out of politics since a war chest of money won't be needed to be nominated for government positions.

I'm happy to agree with you on this one Pappy.

One of the problems with politics here is that if you are someone who stands on principle and if you are prepared to argue against your own party's position, the party will ensure that you don't even get nominated.

So the political system that we have acts as a very effective filter - it filters out personal integrity and honesty.

People who haven't already been corrupted by the party system are actually the sort of people we need in politics.

I don't think it's all that uncommon for good people to WANT to get involved in politics.

The problem is that good people, with principles that they are prepared to stand behind, are almost always filtered out or corrupted long before they get anywhere near a position where they can make positive change.

I still think we're better off with people who don't know how to politician. (I invented a new verb)

Politics is too corrupt for professional politicians to do anything other than serve their true masters: the corporations, the mega wealthy, the media, the parties. They merely pay lip service to serving the people who vote for them.

I kind of agree, but most people are waking up to how corrupt the political system is. They elected a guy who was clearly morally bankrupt and incompetent for office, but he said he was gonna drain the swamp, so they preferred him over many politicians who were better qualified for the role.

Maybe some form of government that doesn't involve professional politicians is necessary.

Think about it this way. If you took 10 young people who wanted to be professional politicians. And then you ranked them according to several categories. You might rank them according to IQ, then you might rank them according to qualifications,  according to personal charm and charisma, according to self-confidence, according to looks, then you might rank them according to personal integrity.

You record these rankings and then come back in 10 years or 20 years and see which of those rankings is most predictive of a successful career in politics.

My guess would be that the personal integrity ranking would be the most successful predictor, those hopefuls with the least personal integrity would be more likely to be successful.

We have a self-adjusting political system that literally filters out people who actually want to make the world a better place.

Is a professional politician who knows how to get things done really better than a random citizen when the professional politician uses his or her knowledge of how to get things done to help corporations pay less tax, help CEOs feather their own nests, help billionaires and corporations get even richer by destroying the planet, and start pointless wars?

You're more likely to get a decent ruler through divine-right inheritance than by choosing
from those who actively seek the role.

The random selection could be done decades in advance (say at birth) and start training
the ruling class to properly understand their function.

I totally agree. Selection at birth, though, would allow greater scope for corruption of the individual.

I would prefer to select people at random and then assess their suitability through a set of objective criteria. Easier said than done of course.

A nice idea, but it would fail miserably. People who don't know the greater scheme of things will be pissed off, and for a very good reason, when they're finally told. People who are told, on the other hand, will be corrupted.

Again, we're fucked either way. People will be people, and that's just about the only thing you can trust them to be.

My parents and my wife’s parents have a good relationship. It’s nice. It’s rare. And they use a word to describe each other: machatunim. We hear it a lot. My wife’s dad, at home: “I spoke to the machatunim today.” My wife’s mom, in an email to my dad: “I’m so glad we’re machatunim.” My wife and I roll our eyes at this. Here we have a classic case of secular American Jews deploying a Yiddish word as a little secret handshake, sharing their delight that both their kids married Jewish. Machatunim: The word even contains that satisfying, throat-clearing chhh—machhhh-ah-tun-um.

But there’s another, more pragmatic reason they use this word: It’s super convenient. The word means “the parents of my child’s spouse.” There’s no English equivalent, which makes describing this relationship otherwise kind of challenging. What else would they say? Co-in-laws? That barely makes sense. My parents would have to say something clunky like, “our son’s wife’s parents.” Machatunim is way better.

Obdurate.

Everyone uses variations of the meaning in synonym, but using this word is rare and I love it!

Blatherskite: a person who talks at great length without making much sense.

Great word. Not that I know anyone like that

Obtuse.

I was called obtuse once when I pointed out to a coworker that it was ironic she shared her birthday with Earth day, because she never recycles. At the time (about 8 or 9 years ago), I thought it was a perfectly valid observation, made with no maliciousness. Now, I can finally see that it might have been insensitive to point out on the persons birthday, on their facebook. When I was called obtuse by her boyfriend, I looked up the word and liked the word, but felt embarassed that it was applied to me. I honestly thought she would find the shared day as ironic as well.

Ironically, I sort of cultivated an air of obtusity while I was at work, to keep meaningless conversations at a minimum. :evillaugh:

The irony became apparent when I actually DID interact with some of these people and they discovered that I was actually the smartest one there by many measures.

Lol, That's some intuitive leadership right there.

miasma.
That one always reminds me of someone.

Here??  :zoinks:
 No, Sand from WP. Recalling he used the word in a poem, mental miasma was the phrase. It just stuck for some reason. Think he's dead now.

Seriously??  I liked Sand!   :'(
He was awesome. It's an assumption, really. Last time looking at wp, he hadn't posted in a long while, and he was already in his 80's when I was there 10 years ago.
Found myself thinking of Sand today, which also made me think of Scrap.

Necrobump much?

Seemed the most appropriate place to put it. Besides, have the impression Scrap likes a good necrobump.

I dunno.  Frankly,  it looked to me like  most of Scrap's  necrobumps have been just to make it easier for himself to repeatedly necroneg absent members. Oooh! have i invented a whole new word? necroneg?  :apondering:  and does the world have much use for that word?   :apondering: thankfully, probably not  :green:

I like the birds a lot. Poetry feels jumpy at times, but most of us have toiled with press fitting a thought into rhythm, rhyme and/or meter.
I did not know he was dead. :'(

Yours create a comforting distance from the typical Scrapheap necrobump, thankfully. The depilated models, nearing apogee, he usually posts must serve him in some odd way.

I didn't know Sand, and now i'm sad that I  missed my chance to know him.

I  checked out the artwork and loved it. I'm saving the poetry for later. because if it's as good as the artwork , I can see it absorbing rather too much of my attention.

Thanks for those links, Jack  :plus: (doubly virtual ofc)

Thinking I recall him once saying he was an artist by career. The poetry came up by accident because he had an interesting way with words and I joked he must write amazing poetry, so he posted a link to a collection of his writing.
