I didn't even have a license when buying my first car. It's 18 for car licenses here. I paid 10000 kronor for that Beetle, which was a lot back then, but it was in very good shape.

Those old air cooled VWs are cool.

I want a VW square back as a project car
My dad almost made me sleep in the garage on that one.
Went out looking for parts for the ghia, following one of those cryptic ads and some old guys directions on the phone, nothing for the ghia, but he opened up the barn to show me the square back, 70,000 miles, solid as a rock. Came home with the tow truck following me in the driveway.
Probably the one I have the most regrets getting rid of. :(

My first car was 1970 VW Fastback. Loved that car, miss it like hell.
-
Of course you miss it. :hitler:

Of course you miss it. :hitler:
Yeah, cos that hitler fucked scammed the german public by taking the cars that they were saving for with some stamp system and used them in the war. what a fuckstain.
-
But it was that "Hitler fucked" person who introduced the idea that every family should be able to own a car. In Europe that was unthinkable in the 1930s. Cars were for the rich, not for the average citizen.

Maybe because he was going to scam the public all along, get their money to fund the war effort before the war start. He obviously had this all planned from the start. He had no intention of giving the public those cars.
-
I doubt I will ever own a car. Currently I don't need one.
-
Me neither. I don't see the point since I reckon I will always live in cities. Public transport is enough for me 8)
-
Christ, am I the only idiot who has owned 15 cars (sometimes two or three at a time)?

That's being committed not idiocy ebf. :indeed: Hell I have over 40 guns in my safe.

Oh, there will be many more. I already have a few in mind... but they are going to have to wait for a year or two.

Lucky bastard. That would be impossible in Sweden, unless you have a collector's license, which is very rare. And then you need a separate license for firing the guns(!) Normally you can just have six rifles as a hunter and one or two pistols as a target shooter (if you could get a pistol license at all). My grandpa had three rifles: one 12 gauge shot gun, one .22 and one more, which I think was 6.5 mm. :-\

11. 2009 Volvo V70 2.0F (my wife's, mostly--I still drive the 2.5T :zoinks:)
I think a car or two is missing but I can't figure out which one(s).
-
I don't think one of my brothers could list them all. He has a thing for relay cheap used cars he drives until they die which can be in two weeks or a year. I have gone an rescued him more than once. He has maybe 4 or 5 of them right now in varying conditions. Mostly light trucks and vans he overloads to the point of blowing the transmission
-
currently own 2:
1991 Volvo 740 (the sedan, not the turbo==sadly)
1994 Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan (which I'm hoping to trade in for the $ for Clunkers if I can get the papers in order AND they decide to do it again)
Didn't own any cars before that because I got in too many wrecks back in MD. Moving to CA didn't leave me much choice.

What Glock model do you have in mind Claude? And which 357 mag do you have? I have an SP101 3".
-
g31 g35 or g20
my 357 is some really old s&w my dad gave me, not sure the model, but its a 4" i think, id like to replace it with a new s&w with a longer barell and the 8 round can
rugers are really nice but i like the bigger frames(at least till i get my ccw)
-
I have a G32 and a G23 barrel to go with it. I have a G33 barrel for my G27 but I use 40 in it because the 357 Sig is obnoxious in that little piece and I like the .40 S&W 155 grain Gold Dots in it anyway. The SIG P239 and P229 are both mild mannered in 357 Sig but loud, the 40s in each have slightly more muzzle flip than with the 357 SIG. My next gun (if I get it) will likely be an HK P2000 in 40, if so I will get a 357 Sig barrel from Midway. My HK USPc 40 is the only 40 gun I have that is not dual caliber. If you get the 31, 35 or 20 I would like you to post pics of it.

Weird thing happened today.
Mom "upgraded" her 89 Jetta for a 95, the notary near where she purchased it wasn't in business due to illness, so we had to take a trip 10 miles out of our way to a local car lot. Went to back out, and spotted this sitting in the back, snapped a couple of pics with my cell phone.

This was my very first car, looks exactly the way it did when I sold it (with the exception of the rust & the dent in the nose), haven't seen this thing in over 10 years, mom said no way until she spotted the roses I etched in the glass over 17 years ago in the rear pop outs.

thats not a type one
I'll have to go dig up some of my old books, but they always referred to that as the Type 1 Karmann Ghia. I checked in Wikipedia and it says they were Type 14's, but that's the first time I've seen it referred to as that. Strange.

Yup, wasn't officially sold in the U.S. either.

Type 1 ghia.
Type 1 included the beetle, karmann ghia, & the thing, all based on the type 1 chassis.
Type 2 included the transporter (bus), camper, single cab double cab flatbed.
Type 3 included the notchback, fastback, squareback and the type 34 ghia which was based on the type 3 chassis and sometimes referred to only as a type 3.
Type 4 included the 411, 412 models
I was never obsessed about VW's, not much anyways.

1986 (?) Ford Tempo
1984 (?) Ford Tempo (I know it was older than my first car, and I know they were both older than me)
1996 Dodge Spirit
1997 Mitsubishi mirage
Thanks especially to the spirit and the mirage I now know enough about what can go wrong with a car to accurately diagnose why my car isn't working right. This is a skill I get to use all-too-often. My cars pwn me, too. My mirage almost prolapsed this summer. That was fun. When I got rid of the dodge, it was sold to a mechanic. Last I heard, he coudln't make it run.
To be fair, my current car has issues in part because Midas raped it a couple years back. Cross-threaded a spark plug; poor car only had 4 to start with, and now it effectively has 3 1/2. Under the best of conditions it woudln't be very peppy. As it is now, when I floor it, it sounds like a small plane trying to take off, but accelerates like a fat kid riding a tricycle uphill.
As soon as I feel like I have the funds and it's a practical investment, I'm planning to update to a grown-up car- i.e. one that's less than a fucking decade old and breaks down less than once a month. This is 2010, I'm done with school, and I should be done with high school/college student cars (i.e. shitboxes).
Christ, am I the only idiot who has owned 15 cars (sometimes two or three at a time)?
Give me time and I'll catch up. I'm young yet, and have shit luck.

I have 2 friends like that also.
I have had 4 cars technically, which isn't bad for 20 years of driving. All have been gems, but probably because our family is car oriented, so not much room for a bad choice.
The first 2 were when I was married, so technically they were half owned by my husband.
My 3rd I saved for and bought all by myself....that little baby never let me down and I've never had the heart to sell her, even though I've upgraded since to my 4th car which is the one in my avatar.....except that's the V8 supercar RACING version :hotrodder:

I feel I need to upgrade.

Too bad Sweden has cowardly speed limits. You can't even legally drive an old Volvo as fast as it can go.

They brought out the Aussie Commodore over in the states and fucked up the look by putting a centre pillar in the front grill.

Yes i have a history with cars....you might say!
My very first car was a mark 2 Ford Fiesta. It was light blue and i called it Felix.
I then purchased my first brand new car. It was another fiesta. Bright Blue.
Then i traded it in for a new Suzuki Vitara soft top, but i also purchased a hard top for it too, which kind of remained on it largely due to me not being able to swap them over. It was the worst car ever. It was fucked in high winds. Didn't keep it for very long.
Now this is where my memory gets 'fuzzy' and i will just list the cars in no particular order as i can't recall exactly the right order.
BMW 305 red
I have had 4 x Peugeot 406 all in dark blue!
MR2 T-Bar in white
Several Camel's Ears (Vauxhall Cavaliers) lol
Currently my front drive has two cars on it
1 x Peugeot 406 needing a new starter motor (which i have)
1 x 3ltre turbo diesel Mercedes which is what i am currently driving. It belongs to my eldest brother who despairs at me and cars and has let me use it basically to get the boy to and from school and take my mom shopping!
right, Ladies and Gentlemen, now to the back yard! I am going to introduce you to my car cemetery
consisting of
1 x Audi quattro 20 valve turbo in red, niceley smashed up.
1 x M3 also smashed up.
Another one of the dark blue 406's, it runs but no tax or MOT
MY PRESENT CAR a Volvo S60 which needs fixing. It is unlikely i will do anything about it while i have the merc!
And blocking them all in is my other brothers LWB Mercedes Sprinter van - should work but battery is flat.
Oh and then there is the jet ski :facepalm2: :facepalm2: :facepalm2:
Can post pics if anyone interested in making me an offer :eyebrows:
Yes i wonder if i am related to Steptoe somewhere in my dark past. A horse called Hercules would likely fit in well :zoinks:

I'm having OCD twitches wanting to fix all those poor broken machines.
What year M3?
-
I will have to go and look at the reg in a bit, dunno where paperwork is, probably glove box. Been in my back yard at least a year poss 18 months. I will check in a bit!
-
I dunno? About 8?
-
Regularly driven two cars. Own only one of them. I really need to get a new car soon.
-
a bunch of chevy and gmc trucks (maybe 6?)
1984 635csi
1973 914 W/ v8
2001 subie wrx wagon (current)
-
i didn't start driving till i was 20 years old. i know, i know... first car was a 1992 dodge shadow, then a 1994 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme, and now I drive a 1996 Beretta z 26
-
^Cars are so different over there, as I have no idea what any of those are! And nothing wrong with getting your licence at 20.
-
Just a 1999 Nissan Maxima.
-
I did not get my license till I was 18, between my mother not having a car and the fact both my brothers caused LOTS of trouble when they got their license and even before, I was made to wait. Then wasn't aloud to drive much at all till I got my grandfather's car when he died.
-
@ EBM
i forgot to say but the M3 is on a 04 plate
-
@ EBM
i forgot to say but the M3 is on a 04 plate
What does an 04 plate mean? A 2004?
-
Sorry yes it means 2004.
It actually means it was reg between Mar - Sept 2004. After sept its prefix would be '54'
Before March in that year it would be plated '53'
-
An E46 M3. One of my favorite cars. What's wrong with it?
-
It was hit by a lampost. It is bent. Not sure if it is a write off. It was not insured which is why it is in my garden and not being fixed at the garage.
It was a nice car :-[ I will get a pic of it tomorrow when it is daylight and then people might say "you are lucky to walk away from that one" and i might actually FEEL LUCKY, lol at the moment i don't feel at all lucky. :'(
-
duh....that should have said right-off
and not write-off :facepalm2: :facepalm2:
it is 3am :zoinks:
-
I believe write off is the correct term.
-
Yes, as it is written off as not worthy to drive any more.
-
ok, and not as in its 'right off the tarmac' and un driveable!
-
Here in Australia I think, a car gets a red sticker and a form filled out so that it is physically "written off".
I have not hear the tarmac expression before!
-
Oh it is probably the same here. I don't think i have ever officially written one off.
Just the expression made me think of 'off the tarmac' which is where i personally collect dead cars. A few are also what are called 'SORN' which means it is not road worthy and without tax and MOT but can be kept on private land, which is where mine are.
Yes the more i look at it, normal people do 'write off' their cars. I love the English language.
-
I keep reading this title as "How many CATS have you owned?"
:include:
-
Never either owned a cat or a car. Not against them but ja, otters tend to not get along with both really. :zoinks:
-
write

i belive that expression comes from a TAX write-off. ie if you donate it, you can get a tax write-off for the loss.
-
Donate it? Why donate something that is physically not driveable? Those cars end up on the scrapheap. I remember GA telling me about a van that her dad drove that had tipped over in an accident. Not much looked wrong with it but the chassis was bent so it was no longer driveable.

12k posts eh?

Yes indeed. You have a lot of catching up to do. Plus how about an avatar? :P

I don't own a car, and can't own one. My family, though, loans an SUV at the moment, and will buy our own come two months later.

I am still driving my 21 year old car and it is falling apart. I really would like a new car.
-
Can't be arsed to list my old cars, considering that there probably is a lit of them somewhere in this thread.

That avatar snorting the cat up there is funny; can't recall seeing it before.
-
Well about 6 years later and I'm still driving my 1994 S10.
It had 32,000 on it when I bought it, I'm up to about 43,000 now.
Obviously I don't go anywhere. :apondering:
-
You don't drive a lot, no.
I used to drive twice as much in a year. My employer said a company car was out of the question so I drove a lot if it in rentals.
-

When I had a company van I used to put 25,000 or more miles a year on it :zombiefuck: Now that I work for myself and try and stay relatively local I am down to 14,000 or so. Every car I have had except the Chevy pick up was driven till it was dead, two I sold to scrap dealers one I let the tow company keep after it was totaled
-
^That's a lot of miles in a year, Parts. Most of mine was long distance. What about yours?
-
^That's a lot of miles in a year, Parts. Most of mine was long distance. What about yours?
I used to do service calls, I would get a list of stops sometimes a dozen of them all within about a fifty mile radius but almost never close to each other which sometimes had to be done in a specific order. I kinda liked it, most days it was more driving than actual work and I got to know all the back roads in Western Ct and South Eastern Ny.

The area known as the Berkshires?? A friend of mine who lived near there described the inhabitants as "chest-thumping, bellowing, penis driven lobotomites".

Driving that much per year and it is almost certainly more driving than actual work. :)
I liked driving, too. Still do. :)

The Berkshires are just north of where I normally went but that seems to be about right from what I saw of them
-
More than I thought
Dodge Charger
Plymouth Reliant
Chevy Caprice
Plymouth Horizon
Honda Civic
Toyota Matrix
Pontiac Grand Prix
And probably one more that escapes me.
-
I've been driving my first and only car for 8 years now, a CH Mitsubishi Lancer. I'm well sick of it and I'm hoping to get something new sometime this year (most likely a larger sedan with a lot more grunt...seeing as I'm not restricted by P plates anymore).

My Eagle Talon had the same basic powertrain but mine was turbocharged. :hotrodder: :headbang2:

I want something supercharged for my next car.

Well they were also badged as a Mitsubishi...something. They weren't available here however. Doesn't appear to be any grey imports here either AFAIK.

I want one of these.

Yes, it was also badged as the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Paul Walker drove one in the first Fast and the Furious.

Let's see:
In order:
1983 Vauxhall Nova
1987 Austin Metro :puke:
1988 Vauxhall Belmont
2001 Toyota Yaris
1987 VW Polo
1995 Rover 214 SLI
1995 Nissan Sunny
1997 Rover 420 SD
1998 Vauxhall Astra estate
2002 Ford Mondeo
2003 Nissan Almera Tino
1996 Toyota Corolla
2002 Skoda Octavia estate
13 cars in 21 years then... I mostly buy the least crap car I think I can wring 2 years out of, other than the brand new Yaris I bought on finance in a fit of optimism. Some manage more, some less. The Metro, Polo and Corolla were short term 'I need a car NOW and I will put up with fucking anything' disposable cars acquired after a sudden demise. I like the Skoda fine so far but the Mk III Mondeo was my favourite - bags of room, huge boot, rock solid on snow and little back roads, went like hell on trunk roads. Even the air con worked. Developed a terminal oil leak and needed expensive suspension repairs at just the wrong time so it had to go. :(

A Renault 19 and an Audi 80.
Still the same score.
The Renault was white, the Audi a metallic grey.

Hubert has a talent in going unknown.
Took me a post about a helicopter to realise who he was.
-
It's because he doesn't have any chatty identifiers. You can usually tell who someone is by the way they post something, or a line they frequently use. But he flies under the radar with that. I seriously laughed out loud when I realized who it was and it was all due to car list.

How's the E-Type doing?
-
I have a Ford E-250 cargo van now. Somewhat disappointed the last van had a 5.4-liter V-8 with tons of power and averaged around 11mpg this one has a 4.2-liter V-6 not much power and averages just over 12mpg. Not a very good trade off in my opinion though it is keeping me from speeding

How does one not get enough power from a 4.2 V6? :-\
-
I guess it would depend on what you carry in the back.
-
How's the E-Type doing?
I had one of those at one time.
My old cars are too numerous to list so I will just note a few of my favorites.
63 Dodge Custom 880, very large. My first car. Had power everything giant two door hardtop, fucking RED and a push-button trans.
70 Mach 1 Mustang, Yellow with black stripes, four barrel 351CI Cleveland engine, Shaker hood, C6 trans (large car towing package), louvers, spoilers, air dams, etc. Did a solid low 14 second quarter mile box stock. Rebuilding and modifying the engine, adding slicks and some traction bars, I took more than three seconds off that time.
69 Boss 302 Mustang, as advertised and just a really fun car to own, all black except for all the fancy gold trim pieces.
67 My first convertible, Firebird with a 400CI enigine sporting three duece carbs and a 4 speed Tranny. Nothing fancy, but damn would that beast go! Only problem, when I bought it, there was something wrong with the linkages which made the three carbs work together. Sometimes the throttle would "hang" wide open and the only thing I could do was turn off the key.
74 Mustang convertible. Just a nice driver. 351 Cleveland 4bbl, scoops on the hood, spoilers out back, nothing fancy, just a Mustang.
73 El Camino 455, 4 BBL, 4 speed on the floor. Fancy assed show car/truck, but I bought it to take the engine and tran out to use in a race car I was building. It was fun to drive but the quarter mile round track dirt scrubber I built from it was even MORE fun.
58 Willys Wagon, that thing would go anywhere, large six cylinder engine, four wheel drive. Kind of ugly, unless you own one and love it. I loved mine.
67 Jaguar E-something. Had a 6 cyl engine. It looked awesome, fun to drive, but it was really a maintenance nightmare piece of shit. Trying to drive it was the mistake. I wish I still had it just to look at and sometimes polish. :asthing:
71 GMC Light Duty pick up, 350CI small block, std trans. I kept that truck for thirty years. NO trouble, just a great little truck to own. It would pull four times its weight of any amount of shit that had wheels and never offer any concern.
I now drive Cadillac Escalade SUV and my wife drives a Lincoln Town Car (destined to be a classic). We also bought a 2012 Chevy Traverse for my son to drive, but he still has not "done the work" to get his license. He says it is TOO POWERFUL for him. LOL!
As far as the other cars being way too many to list, I used to buy, trade and sell cars for money, as an amateur. All of the "cool" cars I have ever owned were attained due to that enterprise. I generally drove every car I traded for or bought for a while.
So that list includes a great many interesting things from the 50s, 60s ,70s and 80s.

How's the E-Type doing?
Haven't really done anything to it. I think I'm going to sell it, it's a bigger project than I really need or want right now. Works out okay though. It's almost doubled in value since I bought it.

5, so far.

How is life for you?

Thinking about getting a new Jag next year.

I carry a lot of materials plus tools and also some days pull a trailer. The vehicle itself is no lightweight either at about 5000lbs empty

You need a V12!!! :arrr:

Thinking about a 2004 F-350 superduty V8 6.0L diesel.
234,000 miles on it though. Not sure how much more I can expect even if running well right now, and I know nothing about working on diesel.

The body will rot out before it dies.
Depends on how it was driven/maintained, 400,000+ if well maintained is not unheard of. You're at the half-life mark though, chances are it will need work on the injectors soon.

I know that when someone says, "Trust me," we all have red flags waving in our faces. Generally we tend to ignore those people, but stop and think for a moment.
You really do not want to sell this car unless there is no way that you can keep it financially.
I toss over the "trust me card" because I know from past experience; you will regret selling it! Mine was totally a piece of shit, mechanically and needed everything replaced (except for the fucking awesome leather interior with its ever loving hardwood pieces) but it looked so cool and it drove nice when it ran, but aside ...
It was one of the coolest cars that anyone can possibly own. PERIOD!!
Trust me, keep it if you can and restore it back to perfection when you have the want/ability/NEED to take on a larger project.
:viking:
Really wish I had kept mine!

When I was in school in the 80s, it was common for girls to have multiple piercings in each ear.
My sister had two piercings in one ear and three in the other.
Some girls pierced right through cartilage, risking infection. :twitch:

I'm an ex-biker, so most of my life I've lived by the rule that your bike should be worth 10 times more than your car. So I've always driven some really awful cheap second hand cars. But I've had some mean bikes.

I'm an ex-biker, so most of my life I've lived by the rule that your bike should be worth 10 times more than your car. So I've always driven some really awful cheap second hand cars. But I've had some mean bikes.
:needpics:

I’ve never driven a car. If it was way safer, I’d totally drive a motorcycle. They’re fun.
-
I have personally owned 9 cars. I've been driving for 33 years.
I have also had 4 company cars that I considered "my" car.
I have written off (as in damaged beyond repair) 2 almost new cars out of those. Not fun.
This is a pic of a car identical to the 3rd car I ever owned:

And this is a pic of a car identical to the 1st company car I ever owned (which I also wrote off). This was probably the best car I've owned in terms of overall handling, performance and economy. But as ugly as a hatful of arseholes. Mine was actually a different colour, "champagne", which was a kind of metallic pale brown (I didn't get to choose the colour).

You should've bought a '73 not a '78 Ford Falcon. :M

Was the cage for you or someone/something else?

And it would need to be a 2 door for what you are thinking of.
(IMO the best low budget movie ever, btw)

Just general usage. Sometimes, when you throw a kid in the back, they try and escape.

Nah. Phoenix. About a block from Tempe.

My used paper cups collection. A part of why I have to move stuff from there still. :cbc:

I have been driving my current car for nearly 18 years.

Well...on page three of this thread (2009) I posted about running into my first car again (1969 Karmann Ghia) after losing sight of it for around 10 years.
Fast forward almost 10 years....
BIL told me my nephew has been helping his friend work on, (while learning new ways to say fuck) a ghia that he found rusting away some distance north of here.
Told him they better check to see if it was mine by looking at the rear windows (tiny roses etched in the corners) or unscrewing the driver's side door sill and flipping it over...(I wrote my name on the underside of it).
They found my name 2 days ago.
My nephew and his friend are in for a world of pain. I never owned a car as frustrating as that one was.

Yeah? I HAVE.
Not the other way 'round. She's like my cups, only I'm running rather low in quantity.
Items don't have the right to object to other items, do they?

I wouldn't be able to trust mine not to 'clean' my other possessions away.
I keep it locked in its closet.

Duh. They bitches.
Which is why you were surprised they didn't impose their will on my cups.
Which are PERFECTLY trained. They do exactly what I desire.

It sounds like you're the one that needs to be trained to be the bitch. :hahaha:

Maybe. But, with the support of my cups, it's not likely that a revolt would succeed.
