Title: Skimp or Don't Skimp
Post by: Gopher Gary on March 09, 2021, 04:28:52 PM
I'm a total cheapskate so I feel like I skimp on most everything. I'm curious when other people are happy to skimp, and when it's worth it to spend more.

I skimp on household cleaning supplies, except for laundry and dishwasher detergent. I really like the smell of the name brand laundry soap I use, and I've never used a cheap dishwasher detergent that doesn't leave film on the glasses.  :dunno:

I can't skimp much on anything except cleaning supplies, bird food, cat food, and a stash of ramen for my lunches at work (or at home)...

I don't skimp on movies, and stuff I add to my collections... most expensive movie I have is an out of print edition of Fallen Angels on Blu-Ray.

I am constantly looking for the best prices on everything and anything I am considering buying but usually I don't end up getting the cheaper option, just the cheapest pricing of the exact product I want.

But OMG, it's anxiety inducing. I can go on for weeks looking.

For groceries and supplies, never. I pick what I want. I don't like change.

I feel like I both do and don't skimp on food. I don't skimp on pet food. I do skimp on our food because I shop at a discount grocery store, but I don't skimp because I don't set a strict budget limit and buy whatever we need, while knowing I'm getting the best price in town. Our grocery bill is still a little but higher than what I've read is average. I don't know if that's because I count household supplies as groceries since they're mixed into the same bill. It could also be because other people don't include take-out and restaurants as part of their grocery bill and we've never been the type to eat out. I do buy a couple of name brand treats for the guys at walmart, but there's no cheaper off-brand alternative of those to try.  :dunno:

I do all my own cooking and only order in food every couple months. I figure that makes up for the fact I get the expensive cuts of meat and fresh berries and the good chocolate. Not to mention the expensive gluten free breads/buns/bagels. Of the things I do like, though, I get multiples when they're on sale and stock up as much as the cupboard will fit.

Clothes, on the other hand, I wear until they fall off me.

I don't skimp on toilet paper. Only the best for my butt.

I do pick the more expensive meats, but I rarely eat the meats so I figure it balances out when averaging a grocery bill for three.  :dunno:

Years ago I used to skimp on toilet paper but Sugarbutt complained about it, so I only half skimp.  :lol1:  I buy the soft stuff, but I still buy it at aldi because it's a little more than dollar cheaper per pack than the same size name brand equivalent.

I do that when buying gifts.

Aloe Vera or Coconut Oil.  It's the only way to go.

I skimp on my own personal care products. I've just never been picky about that sort of stuff and while I consistently use the same things, I consistently use cheap stuff. I don't skimp on the guy's personal care products because they have specific things they like. I use a larger number of products than them anyway, so I may still actually spend more on myself.  :dunno:

I've probably mentioned it on another thread.  One thing you don;t skimp on is washing machines.  Cheap washing machines are always a bad buy.  Get something quality - a Mielle or a Bosch.

Don't know.  But if they have brushless DC motors, a good user interface and a big long warranty I'd be willing to consider them.

I've had my Fisher & Paykel machine for 7 years. It's very simple to use. They've probably got advanced user interfaces by now.

I don't skimp on shampoo and conditioner. I buy it from the chemist because it's guaranteed they have it. It's called T-Gel and it treats dandruff and other skin conditions.

I don't use coupons. There's so few name brand Items we use, and it just never occurs to me to look for coupons for those. I've seen shows about extreme couponing, and felt a bit envious at their skill in acquiring so much stuff for free. I sort of got the impression the time and work behind extreme couponing is like a full time job though, and they had a ton of stuff I wouldn't want. I still should probably put more effort into trying to use coupons for the stuff I do want.  :dunno:

Our previous one was a Mielle.  When it stopped working we were horrified but then we worked out that we'd bought it when we first moved in together and it was nearly 20 years old.   It cost us about £500 back around 1998.

I asked my wife how often she cleaned out the filter.  "It has a filter?" was her reply.

I have the washing machine that came with the house, and it's a situation waiting to happen. It's on an unsteady raised floor that was rotted from a leak from the bathroom above. I bought a sheet of thick plywood and had a guy friend help me position it under the washer. But the washer still shakes like a train running through the basement and it's getting worse. Out of alignment I guess but it's way beyond my mechanical understanding to fix. It's going to die any moment I'm sure.

I suppose I really need to rebuild the floor but I can't lift or barely move the damn machine by myself. There's no physical space to rearrange it and with the cub toilet training, I can't afford to have it out of commission for more than a couple days.

I don't skimp on petrol. I've been told by numerous mechanics to get Vortex or Ultimate (whichever the name is) because it'll be better for my car. Once I got a bad batch though, and the injectors had to be taken out and cleaned.

It's expensive but I hope worth it.

I'm not aware of that kind of differences in the petrol offered here.

I remember when it used to be only leaded petrol.

Do you only get one type of petrol and diesel? At some petrol stations here, there are 3 types of unleaded fuel plus diesel. Once I almost put diesel in my car but because the nozzle didn't fit properly, I realised my mistake. My stepdad put petrol in their diesel Captiva. Mum was spitting mad because they had to pay for it to be drained.

I don't skimp on gas either, but I also don't buy the most expensive stuff. I get what Sugarbutt told me is recommended for my car, which happens to be the mid-grade fuel.  :dunno:

Have heard the best way to avoid bad gas is to use a busy gas station, as their holding tanks are likely to be refilled with fresh fuel often. For the past year have only been getting about a quarter tank at a time. Don't drive much, so was worried about it sitting in the car too long.

No, there are octane ratings available, so maybe that's what you meant and I misunderstood. There used to be more but the low-octane ones are no longer offered.

Plus there's at least one ethanol mix on offer. There used to be more but the environmentalists now focus on hybrids instead.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem if the tank and fuel lines are OK.

I did the Bob Dylan on toothbrushes and went electric about 10 years ago and my gums have thanked me ever since.  Also have a good quality water flosser.  It's the best £60 I've spent.

I've been brought up to be quite frugal, so it's something that's natural to me.

For example:
- I spend the least on shoes/clothes and usually wear them even when they start to develop holes.
- I do the same for day to day things like food/cleaning stuff etc, I usually always get the cheapest stuff or buy in bulk.
- I don't really buy socks and underwear, I usually wait until Christmas when I get them as presents
- I much rather repair things myself rather than spend money getting it done by someone else/to buy replacements. The most ambitious example was making a replacement PSU for a C64 by getting a 9v AC and 5v DC adapter I had laying around the house, soldering them to a DIN socket. It looked rather janky as it meant plugging in two adapters, but it all worked fine without causing a fire.

That's a good one. I stink at fixing things, but sugarbutt is handy although he's too decrepit to do heavy duty stuff anymore. When I think of not paying other people, food comes to mind first but there's other stuff. We don't pay for yard work or car washes either.

I don't skimp on stationery supplies. Recently I spent half an hour in Officeworks stocking up on pens and also some left-handed scissors.

I bought the more expensive ball-point pens because I like the way they smoothly write.

I do skimp on clothes. I volunteer at the Salvos so I get to see the clothes that go through to the shop floor. T-shirts for $5? Yep. Pants for $7? Sure.

I don't skimp on air filters but I also don't choose the most expensive air filters. The difference with the most expensive ones is they're suppose to filter viruses. That seemed silly to me and I figured if one of us has a virus then an air filter probably isn't going to stop us from infecting each other. The last two times I've bought filters, they didn't have the ones I use so I bought the most expensive ones instead. I write the date on the filters but I don't really need to because Sugarbutt usually starts having sneezing fits a couple days before they're due for a change and that tells me it's time to deep dust the house. This time I purposely bought the most expensive ones and I'll keep getting them from now on, because twice now he's made it all the way to big dusting day without an allergy attack and I think it's because of the filters. I don't even know what he's allergic to since he doesn't seem to have seasonal or outdoor allergies, it's only inside. I once read the majority of household dust is skin flakes so he might be allergic to that. I've also considered he may be allergic to dogs, but there's really no point in ever mentioning that.  :lol1:

He definitely is, at least household dust anyway. Sometimes he dumbfounds me because I dust every week and every now and then he'll say something like, that's not even dusty. I'll say I know and it never will be dusty because I dust it.  :tard: A long time ago I told him about the skin flake thing and I make jokes that he's allergic to himself, or I joke that he's allergic to me.  :lol1:

I don't skimp on chocolate, especially this time of year. Red Tulip, Lindt and Cadbury are my favourites. Although I went to the English lolly shop on the foreshore to buy their brand of chocolate covered aniseed rings and some mint chocolates for my parents.

Also when it comes to dust, I don't skimp on swiffers. I once tried the cheaper walmart variation but they didn't seem to grab the dust like the name brand product. My swiffer duster actually looks dingy after doing the whole house, but the walmart one didn't really look dingy so I just assumed it was scattering the dirt more than picking it up. I think swiffers are absurdly overpriced, but I also think they're wildly genius awesome sauce and I love them.

The only carpet we have is a mat in the lounge room and it's huge. We vacuum that. The rest of the house I sweep with an indoor broom and Kayleigh steam mops it. I've used a swiffer before but their replacements are expensive and I find the broom works just as well.

I don't skimp on bedding. Once I did and the sheet and pillowcases pilled. Horrible. I like to go to Spotlight and buy from there. They have a big range to choose from and it's quality bedding. My quilt cost $200 and it's been worth it because the insides don't bunch up and it's really warm.

I meant the swiffer hand dusters. I use them on most everything, even the ceilings and walls. I don't use the swiffer floor products, even though we don't have carpets or rugs either. We have a robovac that runs daily and once a week I'll use the big vacuum when I mop. I also have a tiny flat mop I bought at the dollar tree. It will take swiffer pads, but instead I bought the reusable pad that attaches with velcro. I can wash it out in the sink and it's perfect for quick spot mopping in the kitchen. We have a steam mop but I only use it to clean the grout, and I'm not at all impressed with it as a mop because it's cumbersome and takes too long. I have a big flip mop and it's faster and easier to mop the house with that. :dunno:

Oh yeah, I totally skimped on that teeny tiny dollar tree flat mop.  :zoinks: I think I had to buy all the pieces individualy, but still that's only three bucks for a mop I've used a gozillion times. I would never want to try to mop the whole house with it, but I use it almost every evening in the kitchen.  :2thumbsup:

I don't skimp on soap for the shower. I always get Dove because it doesn't dry my skin out. I ran out recently and didn't have any Dove in the the cupboard. I only had some weird country flowers soap. I used that for a day then I went and bought the soap I like.

I skimp on cards. I get them two for a dollar at the dollar tree. I'm also growing into skimping on soap pumps. I bought one for the master bath to match the new towels but it's already messing up. The one in the kitchen is from the dollar tree and it gets used a gozillion times per day, so today I bought another one just like it.  :2thumbsup:

If I get one of those hand soap pumps that works well I refill it forever. Even if I have all I need and I get a new one that works well, it gets a saved place until I need it.
My kids like smelly oils added to theirs. Son likes pepperment oil, daughter like lavender essence. So, I buy new ones at times.
Skimping to me is reusing.

I saw a meme with an old Grandmother saying:
"This is bad kids. You're about to find out why I washed and saved my aluminum foil, made quilts and new clothes out of our worn out clothes and found other things to make out of old tires and shoes. We're almost there, again."

Kind of scary.

I should have bought two soap pumps today. The one in the hall bath is about seventeen years old, and the shiny top part is rusting around the edges, looking sort of sketchy and gross. Maybe I'll think of it next time I'm at the dollar tree.  :dunno:
