I'm glad that your mom was not really gang-raped by rednecks and left to die in a ditch in Alabama when you were ten.  I'm not sure how old you are, but I think that a tourist gang-raped by rednecks in Alabama then left to die in a ditch probably would have made the news, even back then.  I grew up in Alabama.

I found this to be mostly true as well, while I was growing up in the South.

Respect is perhaps not quite the correct word, but men definitely tended to be more solicitous of women there. 

When my car broke down at night near Birmingham, Alabama and I was trying to push it further off the road, a man stopped immediately and helped me push it.  Then he offered me a ride to the next exit, so I could call for help.  He drove me to a store at that exit where he knew the woman who was working there and left me to wait there because he knew that I would be safe with her.
