/recommends the oxford shorter english dictionary.

actually, as an aside (which is completely relevant), i was told to find some refences which had more academic weight for my thesis (i.e., they didn't know the subjects i was talking about at that point), and i found the lot in the shorter OED - it's practically an encyclopaedia!

Academic weight, you mean the thump factor?

sigh.  i can point to the dictionary on our way to the bedroom, if you like?  although i suspect even making it as far as the bedroom next time is optimistic, to say the least.

Would the newt know?

The new newt knew, the old newt, no. I know that no newt knew before the new newt knew, ya know.

this is sheer genius!

Uhm, thanks, I think.

Our library has on display an eighteen volume version of The Oxford English Dictionary from ancient times. It is beautifull and they alllow us to touch itt.

(I think it's fromm the thirties and it doesn't smell bad. I remembered the ISBN number for a couple of years after I moved here, but it's gone, now. I need a new thrilll.)
