I question how much that was actual
lying, and how much it was the press
running away with it. IIRC, the government
was cooler to the idea of war than the public.

Back then, things were less engineered.

There were plenty of people who wanted it in positions to make it happen.  My great uncle John was in it and my brother had a military issue rifle from the period we used to take to the range

Back then, Bush could get away with anything.  I remember most of my friends wanted to join the military after 9/11.  Of course, they pussied out once they found out they couldn't actually fight who was responsible for it.
