Johnny Smith is a psychic.

As I see it Jesus did have a close relationship with Mary Magdalene, the gospels have downplayed the role she had in the early church. It is doubtful it was anything beyond a close friendship....

Hard to explain why Mary anointed Jesus,
in a manner reserved for noble weddings then.
I'm guessing that there was a specific attempt
to discredit the marriage (too human?) as well
as Jesus's claim to the actual throne of Israel.

See, when he's looked at as a member of the
royal family (traced through JOSEPH - who isn't
supposed to even be related), it kinda kills the
whole 'son of God' thing, no? Christianity had it's
reasons for preventing this side of the story from
being told. And, not many others were talking about
him.

Only Matthew and Luke explain Jesus's geneology in any length, they used probably older geneology of Jesus and extended it back to David and even further Abraham and Issac. Matthew especially was preoccupied a lot with Jesus's Jewish identity and also of him fulfilling Jewish prophecy in the Old Testament. The story of Jesus birth in both Matthew and Luke is part of portraying Jesus as the fulfilment of Jewish prophecy.

There is the Jesus Christ of the Gospels and there is the historical character named Yeshua or Joshua. The Gospels tell us very little about the historical character named Yeshua, all we can be certain about he was a follower of John the Baptist and he was crucified under the orders of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem.

The Gospel of Thomas seems to be a very early gnostic writing, probably written the same time as the Gospel of John which was between 90-100 or a little after it, the writer of John is familiar with the community know as the followers of the Apostle Thomas who wrote the Gospel of Thomas. Gnosticism was an early form of Christianity which was inspired by the Greco-Roman mystery religions.

There are some arguments which put it as
rooted in something earlier. MUCH earlier.

Mind you Pauline Christianity was a upstart compared to original 'Jewish' Christians which were led by Jesus brother James the Just and Mary Magdalene. Gnostic Christianity was another upstart, which much more gentilezed than even Pauline Christianity was.

The very earliest Christianity was known as the Jesus movement, it was a inclusive brand of Judaism, coming out of the idea when the end time comes the Gentiles will recognize the Jewish god and start worshiping him. The Gentiles would be included but not converted. Even Paul still considered himself a Jew, just he believed that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah foretold in the old testament.

i thought it was to discourage wanking.

That came later in the 1800's when they thought it made you senile
