Most older Volvos are pretty "thirsty". A 244 with a 2.3 litre engine in its turn consumes more fuel than the heavier 2.5 litre (and 5 cylinder) 850, for instance.

The D5 turbo diesel has 20 valves. 4 valves/cylinder is standard by most cars nowadays.

My fist car was a 1968 Plymouth GTX with a 400 h.p. 7.2L V-8. It got 12 miles to the gallon, downhill with a strong tailwind!!!  :laugh:
