It's for projecting 35 and 70 mm prints. there's a six-channel Dolby system to go with it, too.(No, not Dolby Digital 5.1; google "Dolby 6-track magnetic sound".)

It *is* cinema quality. It's a Dolby system that was installed in "my" theatre here in town, before we upgraded, and the projection equipment is a 35/70 mm Zeiss Favorit 70 (see picture), a projector that was commonly found in large-format venues around the civilized world.
Yes, you're right--a garage has some deplorable acoustic properties. I compensate by projecting a picture that is sharper and more crisp than just about everything that you've ever seen, anywhere.It's a 12-seat theatre.
