74.    Use a Greek Chorus to highlight important points.
118.  Use both sides of your overhead transparencies.
120.  Do your entire defense operatically.
132.  Bring a microphone. Point it at the questioner, talk-show style.

it's a little of the first thing you suggested.  however, the PhD consists of a piece of original creative writing - novel, playscript, poetry: the first, in my case - and a contextualising thesis, which involves original and rigorous research, much as any other thesis.  what they'll do is grill me on both my academic research and my creative choices.
