Calling you out, Zegh. Prepare yourself for the END
« on: November 22, 2015, 04:09:59 PM »
Of the upset about elongated skulls. How do you think red haired, white skinned people with distorted heads popped up in central America? Was it simply a shit mutation or a legitimately beneficial adaptation to their environ? If it was legitimate, why did the other cultures in the area after the fact not develop these traits?

These people seemed to be pretty intelligent, as they were the first to develop the pottery wheel and spin fabrics that has been found as of yet.

They did spin really neat fabrics and pioneer they own way of spinning pottery around. I am just wondering why a couple of villages of them wound up looking like brown irish people with elephantman heads. I've seen some artist-reconstruction of what people think their faces and bodies may have looked like, and they were some funny looking dudes.

Oh, but that doesn't surprise me. It's very cool - but only goes to show the chaotic nature of ... nature!
Isolated populations tend to be more prone to weird or extreme features (such as the ginger hair of the insular celtic ice age corners, or blond of the blocked-off scandinavia (you'd have to go around finland), or blonde again in the pacific islands)

This is one of the many things that make reality, especially the isolated ones, I don't remember where I read it now, but some Amazonian tribes - while lacking a whole ton of words present in our western language, even concepts, they had many, many words and concepts describing source and trustworthyness of information
We use language to paint our reality, to describe it. Their reality has a wider, more complex relation to information, its intrinsic worth - to them - and it's source :D

That's what makes this so strange. Perhaps they descended of a pocket of humanity earlier on, but they rubbed shoulders with later incarnations o central americans for a good amount of time. Evidence shows that a lot of these funny looking people wound up being "important" people in society, and these cultures integrated. Its speculation, but this suggests to me that they were pretty smart.

Maybe they even melded together genetically like Neanderthals and modern humans. I don't know if the "egghead" people have been given their own name yet. Its still a pretty hotly debated topic, like when the denisovans were discovered.

Yeah, I'm curious of exactly what population you are refering to

When it comes to genetic tracing, humans are especially challenging because we DO move around in a very "logical" manner, defying weather and nature, where most animals are contained in their habitat pockets. Like the whole neanderthal business, it's an uncomfortable thought to consider, having remnant genes from another species, surviving in ours, like a hybrid, freak of nature... :D But if that's how it is, then that's how it is, and most likely - however it is - it's gonna turn out to be pretty fucking chaotically complex.

I love to remind myself, whenever they find another molar or a piece of jaw, they give it a name.
That's all we have, for now, some molar. That molar represents millions of individuals, across time, of that species.
We work the hell out of that molar, squeeze it for everything its worth, cus it's what we got to work with

Across our time, however, we have plenty of more digging to do. Archaeological digs are, like, a few metres across, at best, 10-12 nerds, usually some professor and his lil crew of students, stone-blocks of a ton each, it takes time! There's a lot of ground to cover! :D

Lol, maybe this could be the original genetic marker for autists. The eggheads of central America.  :zoinks:

Its seems only the skulls are different with these few though. A lot at first tried to explain it away with headbinding during infancy and some of them seemed to be a product of this, but many of the skulls can't be explained away so easily. The cavity the brain would occupy in the skulls with red hair was a good deal larger than the rest, and the plates of the skulls do not have the same number.

Its really weird, man. A fairly recent discovery, but old enough that more info should be available. Almost seems like people don't really want to pursue it. There are pictures of many of the skulls and skeletons, and they are indeed weird looking. It seems only a few are interested in these people for some reason. You would think a lot more professionals would be smacking their lips at the prospect of a new type of early human to be studied.

Oh, yeah, but you don't realize how much I hate Google, or rather its "intuitiveness"
Ever since it was implemented, I can't search for anything, it always guesses what else I might actually have meant o_-

Interesting how they only had slightly long heads to begin with, but then further exaggerated this by binding

Sexual selection struck again - aka "hotness" :D

Perhaps it was sexual selection via "hotness", or maybe they were just really smart and valued by their community for that. I can't imagine these weird looking people being hot, but hey. Cultural differences and such. Maybe that really was attractive to them.

Yeah, hotness is relative, and usually is about survival traits, but if they misinterpret the head-shapes as something divine, then that counts as survival too
It may not necesarily be "hot", but it definitely would have been "attractive"

To pigue your interest, their name translates into "the rubber people". Why did they call themselves the rubber people? Nobody knows.

At least it's better than "the people", which everyone fuckin calls themselves back in tribal days
To this day, Norwegians refer to themselves as "nordmenn" - north-men, people from up north.

I've seen those debates of wether or not Olmecs were black, cus of those statues. I think people are being simplistic, and that facial features vary a lot more than people give it credit for.
Look at Björk for example, she looks Chinese, but is completely Icelandic. Just so happen to have beefy lid-flaps :M
