We've had crazy flooding here in Pennine Yorkshire and Lancashire over the last few days, subsided enough today for most areas to be more normal - downstream in York and Leeds they're still badly hit. My house is perched on the valley side above the flood plain but elsewhere in town there have been closed roads and flooded houses.

The US Corps of Engineers has opened some bays in the Bonne Carre Spillway to relieve the pressure on the river levees. They are basically humongous wooden doors that are lifted so that some of the Mississippi River can flow into Lake Pontchartrain and then to the Gulf of Mexico.
