D&D--- epic moments with Calak [zippo]
« on: May 05, 2012, 12:28:16 AM »
So i started a new charecter in DND today. "Calak Jivan" he is a arctic dwarf-- his class being a Monk.

i went to the party an hour early for char creation as a bit of tutoring as its only my second time playing [been waiting two weeks since my first time stoked every day] i rolled for my stats first. i bileve the max stat you can get at the beginning is 18 [could be wrong though]

i got strength: 17 [+3]
       Dextiraty 16 [+3]
       constitution 16 [+3]
      intelegence 11 [+0]
      wisdom 16 [+3]
      charisma 8 [-4]

so... first things first i convinced the DM [Dungeon master-- or controller of the monsters and the environment to those who dont know or have never played] to give me a pet bear at the start-- a polar bear as its part of my back story. he agreed at the cost of making the missions harder [it honestly wasnt hard enough] ... so roll playing my entrance to the party i as a simple monk get into the city after being exiled from a dwarven city after being gifted to the dwarves to command eliet soldires in battler [they all died, i nearly died. bear saved my sorry ass]

i get to the city and there was allready a mission... turns out i got hired by the local government to go clean the rat men out of the sewers to make some money for food and board. my bear not having eaten for a few days and neither have i we were happy to make some coin and not have to pay for my bears meal... well i discovered the party fighting some cultists
they half the party sees me through a hallway and goes "what the fuck!?! a bear!?" and nearly shits them selves. the other half of the party does not even notice my bear [none of them notice me] and continue the fight.

fights over-- theres a half dragon hiding around a corner, a halfling hiding behind a half dragon and a elf pointing a bow at me saying what are your intentions. long story short the bear starts feeding off fresh ratling [small ratmen] corpses while i talk to the party leader {another dwarf}
we exchange bows and than exchange beer [my bear carys a one foot by six inch diameter at the top and botom {say 8 inch middle} cask of brandy around his neck [flasks are for pussys]

i get invited and offered board by the party leader and sure enough we go on an adventure

----EPIC STARTS HERE----

shortly later the partys split up... a halfling disipeard with out telling us [fucking thief] sure enough he runs into a room with window looking into it from near the cealing. theres a caster... he starts summoning earth elementals. [magical beings of stone] they start doing serious damage to him he kills them and than a dwarf comes out of a hidden door on the room... he fiends him off but the dwarf winds up blocking his escape. the partys cought up now though so we just kill it from behind... the casters still alive... he summons more earth elemental and the DM thought it was a good idea for them to go after the biggest target in the room. my bear... he summoned about five... my bear one shot all of them. the halfling rogue snuck up behind and killed the caster after a dwarf found a hidden door.... my bear was unscaithed

shortly after me and my bear and the party leader entered a tower. there was a mage on M floor... he cast a darkness spell. i told my bear to sniff him out. well my bear sniffed out the end of his sword and than got his nose cut open... my bear did not like that dealing two hits of roughly 12 damage each to him... he had 3 health left over and lost concentration lifting the spell. my monk walked up and broke his neck... because i rolled a crit.

after we left the tower me we got pinned down by some creatures on the roof of a wooden outbuilding... they were throwing javalins at us... the halfling rogue and dwarf party leader ran and made it inside the wooden outbuilding they were going to try and find a way up but my turn came before they could... the creatures were standing at the edge... i motioned for my bear to ram a hole in the wall by the door {the door was only five ft wide. my bear was a large creature takes up 10 ft on the map} anyways i ran in front and pushed the halfing out of the way of the door by two squares... in the rollplay he looked at me like "what the fuck?" than the wall exploded and a bear ran into the room trampling one of the rat-lords [full grown man size bi-pedal rats] the halfling had just lit both the rat lords on fire. one was now on fire and crushed while the other had just took an intimidate check for summoning a god... due to the fact they had never seen a 1500 pound polar bear before they took a second intimidate check... the DM rolled a critical failure.... the remaining rat lord pulled out his pistol and blew his brains out.

the bears roll to brake down the wall was 20... i had a bonus of +13 strength. i rolled a 17... for a 31...

while walking down the path towards another out building a trap door opened up and it dropped us into a pit. the dex save to save are self was 15... i rolled a crit to grab onto the ledge. i rolled a 17 to grab onto the party leader another dwarf and the halfling had stolen a ring of feather fall from a member of the party [the half dragon] and so was falling sloooooowly... the half dragon saved her... the dm said for the bear to pull me up from the pit with my buddy hanging on it would be a strength roll of 15. i rolled for my bear a +11 bonus. i rolled a 20... crit of 31 {you cant fail on a 20. its not possible as per game rules but its fun to count the rolls none the less.}

we entered the out building... tenticles came up and attacked rorrick the party leader... he shrugs it off. than a special, stronger, medusa walks out into the room.... she has a mask on so no one turns to stone-- yet. but its on hinges and so she can lift it up at any time... except i have a blindfold on... its not 100% solid so i can see through it... in fact it is fairly see through but it blocks enough to save me from her curse. the DM agreed with this... unfortunately the mage of the group casts open/close on it so every time she tryed to open it it would close.... she was not happy... my friends beat her the fuck down... i ran up and finished her off... broke her fucking neck again with a crit.

i bileve the max stat you can get at the beginning is 18 [could be wrong though]

Depends on racial and other ability score bonuses.

The half-dragon, half-demon, half-illithid, half-farspawn, half-celestial, half-giant, half-fey, half-troll, spectral creature, death knight, ulitharid, phrenic, demilich, races of (element), hound archon hero and  (dire animal) lycanthorpe templates give some nifty bonuses to starting ability scores. That's in addition to all the other freebies one gets with these templates.

Paragon, demilich and "pseudonatural creature" templates give ridiculous (+15 for all of a paragon's ability scores!!  :o) bonuses to starting scores. Of course, you'll need to play a monster character or a PC with potential in a "transitional" prestige class to get some of the templates here.

Then there's the races of numerous "monsters" themselves, as well as two noteworthy player races: githzerai and githyanki, as well as oni, rakshasa, orcish varieties, giant types, goblinoids, fey, "blue" races (usually have a +2 or +4 to intelligence), illithid types, elementals, outsiders, (intelligent) oozes, (intelligent) plants, werecritters and, of course... dragons.

Why you'd want to play as a dragon (since they get hit dice per age category and are likely near-impossible to level as characters during an advanced or 'epic' campaign) as opposed to taking one as a cohort with the leadership feat, is beyond me. A few DMs probably allow it on odd occasion, though.

One thing about your character: dwarven monk? That's an odd and out-of-character thing to have in a campaign. Why not just use a Deep Gnome or Githzerai for a monk, instead? Those two player races are practically built for monk characters.

like dwarves. the rule guide said gnomes and halflings would not be a monk. one due to there on the move lifestyle and another due to something else.

it was only my second game. if i were trying to be a true rollplayer i would not have chosen the class to go with a dwarf your right... i just figured my first ever charecter i just wanted to have fun.... thats all we are trying to do in this game anyways. ill probably be a bit more serious than this on the next charecter i make

i how ever only know the most basic of rules so i chose the most awesome class i could think of.

EDIT: reading over and looking up what you mentioned online. alot of nifty stuff there. thanks for mentioning the goods

Power-gaming (a la Warhammer games or Magic the Gathering) can be fun, too.  ;)

What I read suggested gnomes can make and live in permanent dwellings as much as any other non-human character.

Monks are a nifty, and powerful class. Besides that, they have the "heal" skill, which can help if no priest-type players come along. Here's the thing, though: there's nothing in the monk's class requirements about which race can play as a monk, save for halflings! At that, it merely says that Monk tradition is "alien" to dwarves and gnomes. A gnome that lives amongst elven or human civilization can easily[/ i] learn about various monastic orders this way.

I prefer an LE samurai/sorceror with "arcane schooling" (makes an arcane-spellcasting base class a 'preferred class' for some 3E/3,5E Forgotten Realms characters, depending on home region.)

For prestige classes, I'll aim for 10 levels in kensai, spellsword and maybe exemplar for the "outsider" type that comes with it +it gives me access to utility skills I worldn't normally have.

yeah... true.

i dont even know what a prestige class is. i have read maybe 20 pages of the PHB based on what friends have sugested and am just braking the surface of the knowledge required to play the game. im just trying to focus on dwarves and monks at the moment and gain knowledge of other things as i go.

I played a lot in high school and  college using the first edition rules then a little after I got married  with the second edition and loved it but I have not played in 15 years.  Monks used to be almost impossible to play  I know they changed lots of things but have yet to look at the new edition.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

SO. i got back from dnd about 10 last night and decided to write less of an essay about it than last time... thus waited for the caffein to wear off.

this was a continuation of the last quest so what happened in the last quest was we explored a house. a hole in the floor of the house led into the sewers. we jumped in. continued through a door in the side of the sewers which lead to a massive system of halls and tunnels where we found a reasonably large spider with human hands all over its underbelly. than we continued on and killed a medusa. we severed the medusas head and wound up bolting it onto the shield of one of the dwarves in are party. [it has a welding style mask so as to not turn things to stone unintentionally]

so we continue out of the house medusa was slaughtered in with medusas head bolted onto the shield. we turn to the south and walk down the tunnel into this small room where we faced a demon with a ridiculous armour. took ages to kill and by the time they got him down to low health and my turn rolled around i used my monks special ability flurry of blows and got 3 attacks in a turn two of my attacks bounced off there armour and i guess i just ripped his spine out of the back of his neck with the third because i did pretty good damage and he went down

we found a room with two stairs going up and down. one stairway going up was completely sealed off at the roof with stone and the other went down into a tunnel and so we went down. we explored a bit, killed some shit. came to a room in a huge crevas filled with crystals. a naked lady covered with fire [boss in coming!] comanded a floating island in the middle of the room down. we bluffed are way onto the island and than the dwarf with medusas head said "oh, one more thing... fuck you bitch." and opened the wealding style helm covering her face.... the flaming lady was instantly petrified.

afterwards three cultists came out [some of the party had been left below the island] and we bluffed them into bileving the party member at the bottom had killed there leader and we needed there help defending the island. they took out there crossbows and moved to the edge of the island where my bear and the halfling rogue promptly pushed them off.

we moved to the door the people came out of [they were on the other side of the crevas about 100ft up.] looted the place. found more shit, killed more shit. than moved to what we found out to be a jail. we fought and Killed the jailer. the halfling and half elf bluffed there way behind the jailer. the halfling hit the jailer from behind and the elf tripped the jailer. the jailer fell forwards where the dwarf standing in front of her brought his hammer down onto his head. we freed the prisoners including a troll who is now imprinted on the halfling who let him out... another halfling we let loose went off to kill the cultests we had allready slaughtered. and the ogre we let out got killed by said halfling after he was out of are site

that ends that adventure

when we were back in town i decided i wanted to study at the order of the iron fist [a monk monistary in the city where they have 20 foot walls surrounding the building and the gates never open. in order to study there you must find your way over the twenty foot wall] i had my huge polar bear stand on his hind legs and put his front legs on the wall. i than climbed up and simply hopped the wall "hey guys.... whats with the wall? i knocked on the gate. no one answered"
