Kodak files for bankruptcy
« on: January 19, 2012, 05:01:40 PM »
Quote
(Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co, the photography icon that invented the hand-held camera, has filed for bankruptcy protection and plans to shrink significantly, capping a prolonged plunge for one of America's best-known companies.

The Chapter 11 filing makes Kodak one of the biggest corporate casualties of the digital age, after it failed to quickly embrace more modern technologies such as the digital camera -- ironically, a product it invented.

I remember working in a photo store in high school all we sold was Kodak, we used all Kodak paper and chemicals too  they basically dominated the entire market. You would think a company like that would have seen the writing on the wall when they invented digital photography.

My brother started moving away from the photo processing business when he opened his antique shop back in 2002 he still did one hour photos and custom black and white but it was less and less every year.  When they auctioned off his antique store last year nobody even bid on the one hour machines even when it was just $5 on machines that where over $50000 when new

That's a cute one because most people would probably guess movies instead of Kodak.

Kodak made the film industry happen. I'm sure it would have happened eventually, but a lot of things would have been different. They used to be innovators and I for one think it's a great tragedy when an innovator dies. Kill of a bunch of corporate executives any day, but spare the innovators.

Sad, unfortunately I saw it coming.

They didn't keep up the pace.

I remember when they were one of the most desirable companies to own stock in. Everything was Kodak.

My first digital camera was a used Kodak dc50. The thing was a monster compared to the size of a typical digital camera now.

From what I read there was lots of mismanagement on the part of the executives not just lack of vision.   Kodak chemical division that was spun off in in the 90's? is doing very well.

I still have a Kodak Easyshare camera needs a battery though as it only holds a charge about eight hours

They had some great engineers. I came in contact with one of them, John Pytlak,a few years ago. He was incredibly knowledgeable about all things having to do with film.
