Help An Old Lady Out
« on: November 27, 2011, 01:27:27 PM »
As a lot of you know (and some have guessed) I'm not the most knowledgeable member when it comes to current culture stuff.  So I'm going to use this thread to ask for answers when I don't understand something.

First question:  What is the thing with emo?  I'm guessing it's someone who whines on the Internet, but I'm not sure if there's more to it.

Thats pretty much right.  Im not sure if theres any more to it than that.

Somone who often writes about how unhappy they are would be considered emo.

I think that there's more to being emo.

I think that the person has to post constantly about the same problems without ever taking any steps to do anything about them.

People considered Graelwyn emo.  Here's a link to the blog she started in the Actual Problems thread here:

http://www.intensitysquared.com/index.php/topic,2585.0.html

For example, she complained about the possibliity of being evicted and thrown out on the street, yet she spent the money with which she should have paid her rent on an expensive camera.

Also people who complain and cry about everything mostly to get attention.

What this middle aged woman thinks to have understood is that emo can be a way to dress (Not that different from the way lots of people dressed in the 80-ies) , a way to listen to music, and a way to wallow in emotions, most of all saddening emotions. And, those three ways exist separately from each other. But, I may be completely mistaken.

Oh, my new shoes would do well in an Emo setting. Even my new wintercoat.  :autism:  :hyke:  8)

Here's a picture of the second pair of shoes I scored for the winter (Hardly worn, secondhand, same size as the ones I bought new)

Emo was really a "trend" or whatever - mostly teenagers wearing black, tight fitting clothing, lots of eyeliner (for guys as well) and specific hairstyles, mostly where the fringe goes over one eye, slightly to the side

it was meant to be about the kinad music they listened to (whiny "emo"tional indie or screamo stuff), but was more about the fashion really

so because of the whining, people now refer to emo as being people who moan about their lives without doing anything about it, feel sorry for themselves etc

"Emo" seems to be a pretty common insult here!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

We use the "whiny" definition here more often than we use the "original" definition.

Sort of like we use a new definition of goth versus the original:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth
it is well known that PMS Elle is evil.

thank you all.  You've done an admirable job of enlightening me.

I'm locking the thread* until I have another confusion to resolve.
