Back when when i did that, they had ways of making you very, very afraid to say no, eg a whole week of unwanted holiday, spent fruitlesslessly hanging on the phone, whilst overdue bills pile up, followed by the promise of work every single day next week, if you only do them the teensy little favour of abandoning your only social occasional in months, right now, without a second's thought, and hop straight into work. It's a nightmare existence: too much free time, no chance to relax and enjoy it.
