 :lol:  Well, at the time I joined AFF, I was just beginning to learn about the autistic spectrum and my main concern was getting a diagnosis,
so I made a lot of long, detailed "Do YOU think I'm an aspie?" posts describing my thought processes and social history. Most of my posts there
ended up being long and detailed and they took me a long time to write. I don't want to say AFF is not a fun site, but to me it seemed
more serious than, say, this place. Also, there are some restrictions with regard to language and content, since minors post there,
and flame wars are not supposed to happen. It's just a different kind of site. Also, WAY fewer smilies!   :orly:

Yes, I think it did help, as it explained a lot of my childhood strangeness and current quirks to me. It didn't make as big a difference to me
as it probably has to some other people, because in my case the diagnosis was less obvious (the psychologist took six weeks to ponder it
instead of his usual two weeks because he thought other dx's might have applied instead or in addition). The best thing that has
happened to me as a result of my learning about the autistic spectrum is that I've met great people on aspie sites, and in the process
I've definitely increased my social intelligence and learned to stand up for myself a bit better.   :thumbup:

I never saw that before. I did make it clear to the psychiatrist that I got a dx from that I wanted it kept between me and her and she agreed. I could have gone through my insurance and saved some money but members of my Union are trustees of our health coverage and private info has a way of being compromised*. I have friends in the local who would back me anyway but the hen party nature of my local union could put me at risk of losing jobs. I paid my shrink out of pocket to avoid any crap like the AFF warning alludes to.

Have read about ruined careers post diagnosis; the point made for those with children is a good one too. Have heard of the security leak in your link, and personally know of at least one affected.
