Normally you cut up old flannel shirts into strips, won't cut through the tender stems (according to my grandfather).

NO. It is impossible to accuse them of being rednecks, on these grounds.  (This is Legal Shit 101)

Rednecks have never even heard of dental floss.  Most of them have more tattoos than teeth. Dental floss could have given their teeth an advantage over the tats.

I'd call it a cruelty to the tomatoes.
A bit of wind would make them cut themselves on the floss. (unless she was using the dental tape version)

She may have been! Her father was a dentist, sent her supplies himself, so he may have been sending her the tape-style floss!
