About to do some studying.   My parents went to see my great-uncle Alec (who I am named after) in hospice, he is dying of cancer and is refusing food, water, and treatment of course.   Basically he wants to get it over with and die, he is in a great deal of pain and discomfort.   He just got married last month at the ripe old age of 80, after his wife was dead for over a year.   I kinda feel bad for not going, but I have to study and I really never knew him that well.

I hope he's allowing treatments for pain, as it won't prolong his life, but, at least make his final days more dignified!

Oh and I wouldn't worry about not seeing him or whatever your feeling.  I always felt it's nice to make a gesture after someone dies, but, if I don't know them that well, it's unreasonable to expect me to make a big whoop about them before then.
