On my experience if you want to remain friends with this person you should try to answer as soon as possible and hope that their reply isnt too scary. 
If you keep waiting/not replying to their messages they may think you dont want to talk to them/whatever and stop contacting you which can be scarier than a reply  in most cases unless you want them out of your life
