Genius...
« on: August 02, 2006, 12:35:09 PM »
we all know that whoever invented sliced bread is a genius.

and, whoever invented You Tube is equally a genius.

this thread is dedicated to those things that you find in your everyday lives that you cannot live without.
the way i see it, you will write, "hey, whoever invented the mouse pad (or similar) is a genius."
then lucifer or callaway will come through with a link which tells us who the inventor was.

so basically,

whoever invented ________ is a genius.
Misunderstood.

Whoever invented paracetamol is a fucking genius...

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracetamol

By this time, paracetamol had already been synthesized by Harmon Northrop Morse via the reduction of p-nitrophenol with tin in glacial acetic acid. While this was first performed in 1873, paracetamol was not used medically for another two decades.

Another name for paracetamol is acetaminophen, or brand name Tylenol.

The Systematic (IUPAC) name for Paracetamol is:  N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide

we all know that whoever invented sliced bread is a genius.

From:  http://www.foodreference.com/html/fslicedbread.html

SLICED BREAD
Otto Frederick Rohwedder has been called the father of sliced bread. He worked for many years on developing a bread slicer, starting in 1912. His first efforts met with resistance from bakers, who informed him that the sliced bread would quickly go stale. By 1928, Rohwedder had finally designed a slicer that would also wrap the bread.

For many years, Battle Creek, Michigan has claimed to be the first place Rohwedder’s bread slicing machine was used, and the first the first place where sliced bread was sold. However, there is no evidence to back up this claim.

New documented evidence, has come to light recently, which refutes the Battle Creek claim.

Karen L. Hicklin, the Director of the Livingston County Library in Missouri was kind enough to give me the following information.

The Chillicothe, Missouri Constitution-Tribune of July 7, 1928 carried a story of the new machines first use at M.F. Bench's Chillicothe Baking Company, 100 Elm Street in Chillicothe, Missouri. According to the story, Mr. Bench assisted Rohwedder in the fine tuning the new bread slicing machine.

So - Sliced bread was born in Chillicothe, Missouri, on July 7, 1928.

This is not a "They are genius" statement, rather they are fucking idiots, but they did what they did for a greater cause (unbeknowst to them).  Bless all of the stupid humans who tried eating and smoking and injecting into their eyeballs every substance conceivable, and therefore discovered intoxicating agents.
And as always, these are simply my worthless opinions.
Reverence is fine, Sanctity is silly.
We're all fucked, it helps to remember that.

Whenever I knit, I think of what person invented it.  To take two needles, and weave thread around and through them to create warm clothing - that invention was genius.

However invented the computer?

http://inventors.about.com/

Quote
Rome was not Built in a Day
And neither was the computer. "Who invented the computer?" is not a question with a simple answer. The real answer is that many inventors contributed to the history of computers and that a computer is a complex piece of machinery made up of many parts, each of which can be considered a separate invention. BTW, I have written a whole series of articles on the topic.

Whoever invented aspertame is a genius.  Same to the inventor of the more recent (I think) Splenda.
it is well known that PMS Elle is evil.
I think you'd fit in a 12" or at least a 16" firework mortar
You win this thread because that's most unsettling to even think about.

I can't eat sugar so was thrilled with the disovery of Splenda.  But I started having problems with puffy eyelids, read somewhere on the net that Splenda can cause that, so stopped using it.  Lo and behold, my puffiness went away.  Weird.  Now I just use honey, which is expensive, but better than looking like shit.
